There are two measures which the. opposition seem disposed to ,go any lengths' to defeat._ One of these is the proposed purchase of the Drummond County Railway, by lease' ‘of ' which the Intercolonial has been extended to Montreal. The other measureto which strong objec- tion is taken is the redistribution bill. Both measures will undoubtedly pa=s -the Commons when a vote can be reached upon them. What good ob- ject can be served by obstructing these measures 'I The re-distribution bill is loudly de- nounced as a gerrymaizder. We fail to see the justice of the denunciation. The bill is by |.o means an ideal one. If restores county noundaries in the main. ~It certainly does not equaliee the number of electors entitled to re- turn nne member. It leaves great in- equalities in that regard, and it creates other inequalities. An instance of the lnequalitiesleft as they are is found in New Brvnswick where Westmore- lilld, with 8,159 votes and Resti- gouche with only 1537 voters Will each return one member. ' Objection may also be urged to the creation of doublémember constituen- cies, giving each elector in such divi- sions the right to vote for two men, whilelhe rule is that individual elec- tor s`h`all vote for but one V representa- tive. But the main object of the bill' 18 _restlox in (tzitario the conditions axis ing ore eout eous e - milder of 1882, and ihis objoifiiif honestly carried out is a proper one, Nor do we think that the changes bf°°sht about by the re-distribution bill are likely to give to either party any considerable advantage. _ Ono object, doubtless of the opposi- tion and obstruction against the two measures referred to is to stilien the Senate so as to cause the defeat 4! one or other of these meas- ures in that body. The wisdom of ouch action must be doubted by those who have considered its probable effect. The Senate will take un unusual and questionable course if it interferes in a matter of redistribution of the Commons seats, a matter directly aifecting the Commons exclusively.
