Desirous of having a pretty table, Lady Barker had herself expended much oarslndeooratinglt. Shehadjustre- ceived from Europe certain dainty chi- na nguros and ornamental dishes and had arranged a tempting show of sweetmeats, dowers and fruit. When dressing time came Lady Barker charg- ed her servants to be on t_he watch and take care of everything: but something of interest occurred outside, and every servant left the room, quite forgetting to closethe open window. Before this windowlwas a big tree on which sat several monkeys which had watched the preparations for dinner with much interest. A half hour later the hostess appeared, ready to receive her guests. Just to be sure that everything was right she gave a glance into the dining room. There she beheld a busy com- pany of monkeys hard at work, grin- ning and jabbering, their cheeks and arms crammed with expensive sweet- meats, while the table presented a scene of frightful devastation-broken glass and china, fair linen soiled, every- thing tossed about in hopeless confu- sion. From this wreck she had to turn aside and welcome her guests with as much ease of manner as possible. Din- ner, of course, had to be deferred until order could be restored. Ridden on the Spinal Cord. The following remarkable essay on the horse is said to be from the pen of an Indian student: “The horse is a very noble quadru- ped, but when he is angry he will not do so. Hels ridden on the spinal cord by the bridle, and sadly the driver places his foots on the stirrup and divides his lower limbs across the saddle and drives his animal to the meadow. He has tour legs; two are on the front side and two are afterward. These are the weapons on which he runs. He also defends himself-by extending those in the rear in a parallel_.directlontoward his foe, but this he does only when in a vexatious mood. There is nopnimal like the horse. Wright would have the public know that he ls still lu the ranks of the Liberal party and a follower of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, despite the fast that The Examiner has used his name as one of the committee appointed bythe Conservative Association to make arrangements lo meet Mr. Borden M. P. While Mr. Wright raises no objec-` mon to Mr. Borden’s visit., he feels that hs has more important duties to perform. J. D. Russ, whose name The Examiner has dropped also feels indignant that any other name, particularly that of the one used, should have precedence to his and thinks that he has a stronger casef against The Examiner than has is upto The Examinerto make amends forthe wrong it has done these' men. Though as the matter stands there is not much danger of any seri- ous trouble at the Howl, The Examiner man had better not dine at the Russ for awhile, lest he get his meals cooked con- vrary tohis taste between two such fires as has stirred up.
