Although it is fairly wcli filled there will be great loasea in cut- ting and harvmting. Fields of potatoos.xcspeci.ally on side hills. have been badly wash- ed out and tops are broken. Corn crops have also been severely damaged, although there have been reports that one hybrid va- riety stood up well under the in- ten:-e wind and rain. The Strike Situation it is difficult to say at the mo- ment just what far-reaching ef- feels this strike may have on our Island economy. At the time of writing our Federation is co-oper- ating with the Boards of Trade and Government in making a Pro- vincial survey of our feed. flour and other possible shortages. At this time of year it is a gen- eral practice that feed and flour stocks are low because of the us- ual price dccrease during the next few weeks. There have been. a few reports of panic buying and hoarding of sugar and flour, but this is not general in the rural areas. There appears to be about a ten days supply of flour and feed on the Inland if it is properly dis- tributed buf. according to reports from the main dlatributingipointa there will be some extreme. short- ages within the next few days. Potato Board Progress The newly appointed Potato Marketing Board plans to meet. early next week to analyze in de- tall the potato situation and map out a program for the coming season. as N are being mgde for the chairman of the newly ap- pointed Board to give a special broadcast to our Island potato growers as soon as a definite pro- gram is decided upon. Mr. Stephens from B. C. met with the Federation executive last Friday evening before leaving the Province. His feeling after d' cussing the situation with both the trade and the farmers was that a Board with everyone working together could result only in in great improve- ment that would not injure any- one who wished to co-operate in the interests of the potato indus- try. . Heir-ecorded a broadcast which will be ea :1 at the same time as the report of the Potato Board chairmen next week. Poultry Meeting Following the annual meeting of the Approved Flock Association in July, there was a special session held to diecuas the need of pro- vincial Poultry Improvement Or- ganization. At that time the seri- ousness of the future poultry marketing situation was outlined -and our past dependence on Gov- ernment support policies emphasi . It was felt that producers must do something to co-operate in maintaining price levels, in elim- inating inefficiency in the hand- ling of eggs and poultry and in advertising and promoting the in- dusiry by exhibitions. etc; it was recommended that a fur- ther meeting to be held of the producers. cgg grading operators, poultry processors and hatchery- men during the latter part. of Augdst. Reported by the British Farm publication "Farmer and Stock- breeder." the tests made by the firm were on the basis of a shoul- der measurement of not more than two inches of fat. English bacon coming to the firm tested only 19 per cent to that standard. Danish bacon 50.4 per cent. Dutch bacon 71.0 per cent and Canadian bacon 00 per cent. qj. Practical Action In ltural Ilealtla Getting competent doctors to stay in rural areas has been one of the problems faced by farm people in the Maritime: for many years. The New Rom district Farmers' Federation in Nova Scotia decided that one way to do it was to build a home for their new doctor. They recently organized a co-operative body to set up the project and are also arranging to secure a mini- mum salary for their doctor. Applications !'or Scholarship Only three applications have been received to data for the scholarships offered by Maritime Co-op. Services to attend the Ag- ricultural'Course at Truro. There has been two applications received for the overseas scholarship. Any- one intending to ppply for those scholarships should get their ap- plication in to the Federation of- . lice before next Thursday. Farm Efficiency when discussing organized ei- forts and the attempts of working classes to raise their living stand- ards and when comparing prob- lems. industry and labor often point to the inefficiency in agri- culture. Thia point has hccn cm- phasized to a great extent recent- ly and we believe the time has come to analyze it. No one has ever proved that there is more inefficiency among farmers than in any other indus- try. . One aspect of this the public should realize: when a farmer is inefficient the cost of that ineffic- iency is borne by himself because he gets the same price per unit that is, per bushel of wheat. pound of butter. dozen of eggs. box of apples. pound of beef as his more efficient neighbor. if he chooses to be so inefficient as ,to take three times as long to produce a pound of butter as he should. he suffers the consequences of those methods himself.
