Can I forget The least of thy sweet tritles ° Che window vines, which clamber yet, Whose blooms the bee still rifles ' The roadside blackberries, growing ripe, And in the woods the Indian-pipe * Happy the man who tills the field, Content with rustic labor; Earth does to him her fullness yield, Hap’ what may to his neighbor, Well days, sound nights—V, can there be A life more rational and free ‘ Dear country life of child and man ! For both the best, the strongest, That with the earliest race began, And has outlived the longest Their cities perished long ago; Who the first farmers were we know, Perhaps our Babels, too, will fall; lf so, no lamentations, For Mother Earth will shelter all, And feed the unborn nations; Yes, and the swords that menace now Will then be beaten by the plow. o<- a -+o A Small Boy and a Hose. Ina busy part of a New York street, one afternoon, a very small tow-headed boy espied a coil of hose lying on the outer edge of the sidewalk. Grasping the nozzle, he drew it towards him, sit ting down in the operation. Then he took a new and closer hold, and tugged at the nozzle. It happened that one of his hands clutched the stopcock, and that the lower end ofthe coil was con nected with a Croton water pipe. ‘The stopcock turned easily. The half-inch stream struck the boy in the face, and he went over backward. He still clung with one hand to the nozzle, and the stream smote him in the right ear. He tumbled over sidewise, and the water spurted down the back of his neck. Then he got on his feet and tried to put the hose back as he had found it. As he lifted the nozzel up, the stream took an elderly man in the back of the neck who turned in surprise, and got it full in the face. Two little girls giggled. The next moment the bey had fallen down, and was writhing with the aozzle, and the stream was chasing the two little girls across the street. By this time a little crowd of men, women and children had gathered. The small boy tickled a cab horse in the flank with his next twist of the hose, and when the horse began to kick, he started to run with the nozzle stillin his hand, and the crowd fell back respectfully. A Skye terrier that had failed to com- prehend the situation, was drenched and Sent up the street ki-yi-ing. When the crowd looked from the dog to the boy he had talleu upon the hose, and the end of the nozzle was ennecealed nnder him. Around him the dampness- was rapidly increasing. The small boy seemed to be getting desperate. He rose and madea mighty effort to coil up the hose. Ashe swept the points of the compass with the nozzle the crowd fell back, dampened and in dis- order. A women rushed out of a store. Apparently she was the small boy’s mother, and had just missed him. She acted with great executive ability. _ ++. Grim Humor. _ The persons who caused the explo- sion ot dynamite recently in Scotland Yard, showed a touch of grim bumor as well as defiance. Scotlnad Yard is the headquarters of the Metropolitan police, and is situated in one of the many historic places of London. Near- ly one thousand years ago, King Edgar named this place Scotland Yard, and here were at one time the royal resid- ences. In ihe reign of Henry I{., the property of the Scottish kings, was con- fiscated here during a rebellion in the North. Margaret Tudor, wife of James IV., daughter of Henry VII, and great grandmother of James I. of England, through him the Stuarts came to the throne of England, found a home with- in this enclosure after her husband was killed at Flodden Field. Milton lived in Seotland Yard when he was Crom- well’'s Private Secretary. on ++ <e—— __- His Excellency the Governor-General with Lieuts. Streatfield and Anson, A D.
