Ch arlotte‘nwn May 25 1899 Agents - - i REV. MR. M¢NEl|..l.'S DISMISSAL' We have now the government organ’s excuses for the sumiimrydie- misss] of Rev. D. McNeill item the Education Oilice. It is quite brief_and we repeat it here. The Patriot says: _ Mr l-liven Stewart Mc`Plxail, teacher. at liampton. has been appointed clerk in the Department ot Education in place of the Rev. D. McNeill. The latter hes. been a iaithtul oicial forsevetal year! certain changes in this department, the pense with Mr. McNeiil’s services in active man in the position. _No doubt the public will see the necessity for the change. _ _ This is no doubt intended to put the best possible face upon a trans- action which many fairminded people view with great disfavor. Mark the belittling of Mr. MoNeill’s term of work by the Patriot. 'He has been i, “a faithful `odicial for several yearsl” 5 Rev. Mr. McNeill has unquestionably been afaithfnloicial as the govern- ‘ ment organ is forced eo confess, and not for “several years” merely., but for more than a quarter of a century. Surely it was _ due to a faithful of- . iicial of twenty-six years’ against p whom no fault had been1charged,.;_that the matter should have been talked ove`r.wi_th, and the necessity of is change, if such e_xist;ed,__should have been pointed out to him in a. friendly way. The manner in which the change was made is inconsistent with the construction put upon it by the Patriot. _ So far as we can learn there was no complaint from the head of the de- partment, nor from the teachers, c'.'.;r 200 of whom on the last quarterly psy day received their check-. :`.-- in Mr. McNeill. Nor is itclaimed :hat there was_“a petition” to the Premier signed by a number of respectable hut invisible names, calling for his disinte- sal. On the face of the transaction it simply appears that Mr. McNeill’s place was wanted for another, and this is demonstrated by the fact tnat the other was appointed even ottnie Mr. McNeill was removed. Q The Patriot says that _ii younger and _more active man was needed in the position. If the Patriot and Mr. Farquharson will apply the same rule ;to the provincial government, they can perhaps find there men quite as old, and less active and competent than Mr. McNeill. Would the Pat- riot recommend that they shall be dismissed, without further warning than to have the names of their suc- cessors suddenly thrust before them? We cannot escape the conviction that Rev. Mr. McNeill has been treated with harshness and cruelty as to the manner of his dismissal, and that -needless indignity and hardship have been laid upon one who by faith- iby long and energetic toil in the Edu- cation Oilice hadfdeserved thefconsid- eration and respect of the entire Pro- much longer notice, or sgrstuity, or both, even if his removal had been necessary in the public interest. *___-g_ii. _ And now it is stated by the Liberal organ that no appointment has yet been made to the Queen’s county ga Pi befully and earnestly_considered.” It may be that the remonstrancea which have been pouring in upon Sir Louis Davies during the past few days have caused a_ reconsideration of matters that were thought to be agreed upon last week. The amendments to the Liquor Re- gulation Act have been in force since the Amending Act was assented to by th i Lieutenant Governoron May 19th, Six o’clock in the afternoons of Satur- days and seven o’clock on market days are the hours named for closing f the saloons. There`is also the penalty of two to live dollars for treating, and persons purchasing liquor from drug- gists will require to have the certifi- cate of a registered physician as their warrant.
