The chicks loved it. it was fun to lie still under a brown leaf while Mother pretended to look for them. But there were other times. many of them. when Mother gave the hide signal be- cause she had heard a twig snap. or the rustle of leaves. or some other sound that made her wor- ry lest it should mean that dan- ger was near. She never waited to find out before giving the sig- nal. it was far. far better for the chicks to hide from nothing than ; holidays with not to hide from real danger until too late.
