This will } “obably ee the course of the Bri ish Cie ve nme : towards him. Indeed it is stared by me of the English journals that had it not wore for the Afghan campaign Theebaw wou hava been dethroned long ago, oy © ie necessity of dealing with a greater man ° her Ali saved him for the time. His conduc : however, then and since, has bee such as to entirely alienate his subjects and pervs his unfitnes3 torule. A war with ar would be a very small matter, a an baw’s army is a rabble, and woul ao )- ably desert him in a body. Britis _ mah is now a flourishing and prosperous ¢ : . pendency of India, and the territory which Theebaw governs so badly might be made equally prosperous under British rule. ' i - -—=-_-- Practical Ending of the War in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan campaign has been an] inglorions one for the enemies of the Brit- ish. ‘he Cabul revolt was evidently con- ceived in s@pidity and the movements off the revolters have been attended with mis mismanagement or . cowardice, perhaps both. For all of which the Beaconsfield Cabinet must be truly thankful. Gen. Roberts reached Cabul on Wednesday, 1n- stead of Tuesday as was expected, and the citidal was immediately evacuated by the hestile Afghans. Cable despatches from London are as follows :—- 3 “4 despatch, dated Simla, Friday, mid- night, says :—Gen. Roberts was before Cabul on the Sth inst, General Baker and MacPherson have been detailed in strength to attack the enemy, who have assembled from above Balehissar. If these forces can be brought into action, Gen. Roberts thinks the enemy will be able to make another tight. Massy who was seut to cut off the re- treat ofthe Afghans on the road between Baunin and Kohistan, captured seventy-eight guns ir Spalur. The guns were found in an} abandoned entrenchment, and among them ere seventeen Armstrong 8. “The ‘Standard’s’ despatch from Benihessar, near Cabul, dated at a late hour on the 8th inst., says? ‘News has been received that the eitadel and palace of Balchissar in Cabul have been evacuated by the enemy. There will prehabiy be no further resistance, and a peace- fulentry will immediately take place.” The Russians, meantime, have been on the alert, and since the complete success of the British has been assured, have been planning to secure the leniency of England. According to the London “‘Standard’s” in- formation from Berlin, Russian overtures te England relative to Afghanistan, have either been, or are about to be, made. The Cvar desires the assurance that England will not occupy Herat or the Bodakshan Plateau. —_-———- An Advertising Fiend. (From the San Francisco Post.) A «nique incident occurred at Bald- win’s Theatre the other evening, which was not down in the bills, and which sharply iliustrates the proverbial push and ingenuity of certain San Francisco adver- tisers. It appears that the advertising agent of a well-known Kearney street auction house had engaged one of the upper stage boxes for Thursday’ evening, and a few minutes after the doors were opened the ushers were paralyzed at beholding a large canyass transparency being expeditiously and quietly erected in said box, and bearing vn its surface, in two-foot letters, the fa- miliar legend, ‘“‘Try Guffey’s Condensed Chowder!’ They at once hurried to the box and begged the occupant to desist. That enterprising individual simply shrug- ged his ehoulders and went calmly on light- ing Wax tapers for his illumination. The manager himself rushed breathlessly to the spot ahd ordered the agent to leave the house ee ‘Not if I know it,” replied that individu- al,‘ cheerfully. ‘‘I paid $20 rent for this box until 11 o’cleck, and I intend to do what | please with it, bet your life.” In vain the manager stormed, pleaded end olfered to return the money—to pay twice the amount even. At last, as the audieuce had begun to gather, he ordered the ushers to remove the sign by force. At this the agent deliberately drew his revolver, and, Lacking the whole crowd out of the box, locked the door. In this emergency a coupe was despatched for the man’s prin- cipal, Mr. Guffey, who arrived in a few moments post haste. He was hugely amused at his employe’s persistency, and at once ordered the removal of the bone of contention. As the much disgusted adver- tiser struck his tent, a bright idea illumin- ated liis disappointed visage. Taking Mr. Guffey aside, eagerly :— “Well, if Ive got to quit, wouldn’t it be better to have them put me out by force |” ‘*Why, so?’ “‘Bocause, you see, that would make it a splendid assault and battery case. Be in all the morning papers. Magnificent ‘ad.’ Don’t you see ?” But it was not to be, and the cliauypion advertiser furled his banners, aud sadly filed out to slow music by the orchestra. —_— —o 600 Tho Customs receipts at Halifax for Sep- tember were $110,884, an increase of $8,- 800 over the corresponding period lass year. | ——«6 00 — —__—__—- Two or three gentlemen can be accommo. dated at a first-Class house, in a pleasant lo- cality. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— Dear Srr—It is now two years since your ‘‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- \duced to me. if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to yuu, as at first the happy etiects seemed to me to be ‘‘too good to true.” 1 was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. . In reading in your Circular I scw my case described in many ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would fee) like smothering and be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before 1 had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, | quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until ot late I have taken some for a cold in my head, A sense of duty to sutferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of, it yon may see proper Yours truly, W.
