G. F. Ssvstoua. Admiralty House, Halifax, 21th May, 1858. HASZARITS GAZETTE. Saturday, June 4, 1853. We publish below the Address adopted at the meetin of the inhabitants of Queeu’a County, he d on Wednesday last, and which now has for Signatures at Apothecaries’ Hail. To the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty; The humble Petition of the Undersigned Inhabitants of Queen's County, in Prince Edward Island, as- seinbl at a Public Meeting, convened by the High Sheriff, in Charlottetown, June I, 1858. Most Gracious Sovereign—— We, your Majesty's dutiful subjects, the Inhabi- tants ofQuecn's County, in Prince Edward Island, in up roaching the Throne, humbly beg to tender to your sjesty our sentiments of uafeigned loyalty and devoted attachment to your Majesty's Person and Government. We to represent to your Majesty, our serious concern at the urport of u Despatch received from His Grace the uke of Newcastle, your Majesty's minister for the Colonial Department, dated I)ownIng Street, 22d April last, and receutl published in this Colony, by which it appears that is Grace, in reply to an Address from the Colonial Le islaturc, pra ing for a retention of the Troops usual y garrison in this Colony, has stated, " that he has not felt himself at liberty to ndvise your Majesty to comply with the pre er of the A dress.” ' ‘hat should the intention of your Majest ’s minis- ter be carried into effect, and the Troops hit erto sta- tioned at the Garrison of this Island be withdrawn, your Petitioners seriously apprehend that the absence of such a force, although but a single Company of In- fantry, might be attended with consequences deeply injurious to the state of Society, the supremacy of the Laws and the authority of your Majesty's Govern- ment in this Colony. 'l‘hat the insular position of this Colony, renders it next to impossible, under any emergency, that prompt and elfective assistance can rded uring the winter season. and the suspension of the Navigation usually extending over, at least, five months of the yen in this respect difl‘ering from all the other de- pendencies of the British Crown. This being the case, and its being universally known that the practi- cability of receiving Military assistance is essentially necessary to the security of the Civil power, we conceive a most in'urious effect will ensue, from which other flaces, ditferently situated. are exempt. That the prosecution of the Fisheries in the Gulf around this Island have now become so extensive, and the large number of Foreigners engaged in that business who yearly land upon its shores, is bscoining so numerous, that ife and property now, more than ever, claim the especial protection of such a force as that now solicited ,—us many as 2000 Foreign Fisher- men having on recent occasions landed at one time and at one place on our shores. That to supply the want ofsach protection b on- rolled Pensioners and organized Militia. ora olice Force, would entail upon this infant Colony a Tax to an extent which its inhabitants are not in circumstan- cue to sustain. That the lands of the Island, at the period cf its co- lonisation, having been granted away to individuals huviug claims upon the Imperial Government, and for the most part strangers, to an uninterested in the vici- fars of this Colony, without reserving any material quantity for the use of the Colonial Govsrnnieut, and there being, up to the present day, no other source of Crown Reserves, such as are avaliable to nearly all the other British Colonies; and this Island having re- cently taksu upon itself the burtben of its own Civil List, is at present absolutely without the means of supporting such a force, either Civil or Militar , as would supply the place of the said Company o Re- l"l"’ P‘ . . . . That your petitioners conceive there ‘are few mili- tary stations, if any, in the British dominions, where regular Troops can be sustained at less expense than in this Colony. ‘ We feel it our duty, further, humbly to remind your Majesty, that your Majesty's Representative cannot be an i a manner suitable to the dig- nity of your ajesty’s Throne, without the presence of your Majesty a regular Troops. Your Petitioners therefore humbly pray, that your Majesty will be pleased to take the foregoing circumstances into your Majesty's most gracious consideration, and cause sash orders to be given in t ' ensure to the Colony the Constant prusence of a Detiichnisiit of Military Troops. equal to at least, if not greater, than the number stationed at prmeut in its garrison. Vancarioit or run cs —We are be able to inform our readers, that a valuation of the Ordnance property ere,has not been ordered, b the home Government, witha view to its e, as stated ins former issue, but the valuation has been made in pur- suance of an order lately given which directs merely, that a Report of the value of the 0rd- nance property in the Colonies, shall be made, in 0 or to ascerhin what portions are ladie- penaable to Garrison purposes.
