Many universities, and some high schools throughout the coun- try. impose restrictions on partici- pation in athletics. making it de- pendent on academic achievement. A student must make satisfactory progress in his studies before he can take part in athletic sports under the supervision of the uni- versity or high school. 0 O O in some of the larger universi- ties, of course, prowess in athlet- ics has become an important means of advertising the seat of learning. and it is becoming in- creasingly difficult to enforce ex- isting regulations as they apply to a star athlete in any particular sport. Many now believe that in at least some of these centres, a student's ability to shoot baskets from all angles on a basketball floor, or throw a. long. accurate forward pass on a football field. can cover a lot of vagueness in matters of philosophy, physics and mathematics. . I As far as high schools are con- cerned, the pr ” of imposing these restrictions can easily be over-emphasized. It seems desir- able that young people with an aptitude, whether it be music, mathematics. or making the red light ' i behind a goal net, should be" permitted to themselves. to give their God- given talent full rein. It takes all I kinds of people to make a world. and if a youngster can make a better mouse-trap than his neigh- bour. by all means, let us get him the lumber and the wire, andtcll him to go right ahead. I I 0 We think the practice of some restriction. carefully applied. can be of use, however. The lure of school sports sometimes puts pu- pils. with sufficient ability to suc- ceed in their studies, on the road to academic failure. If they knew from the start that they could not drop below a. certain minimum of effort in school studies, if they expected to take part in school sports. . outlook might result. Please note. we say "minimum effort", not minimum of achievement. Dull pupils should not be punished for fabiiing to aocompll.ah.ths impos- sl e. O 0 O is it not possible that some kind of restriction based on a pupil's ehort in study. insofar as that can be mounted. with the pupil given the benefit of the least shadow of doubt. might produce benenclal results? Personally, we think it would. mnrau 1111.: February was the last month of the year in the Roman calendar. until it was placed after January in 452 l.O. a more evenly balanced In western aulnvua -Ill Indian River Players in ualpoque Hall May Ind- . ........ ..1;p:.m olsuosl. aohaoilpucm. w ma Saturday! beglnnms May ....unsoul.' ururln onusc CIIAIGI. service lundu. 1131' gm. nedequo ll A.M.: Borden 3 EM.)
