hor Grace over thirty years ago, th:

bles. _ln the first place, the Orange-
men nnd the Catholics were at _var-
iance, and in the second place, trou-
hle had started with the Catholics
over Society matters which saw two
different factions spring up. To live
in a place with tx~.oub1e,all around
was not very' inviting for a Bishop,
yet Ronald-Mcllonald faced the trou-
ble with unflinching zeal and ardor,
and by wise counsel, prudence, and
the genial manner for which be was,
noted saw the end of those bitter
strifes. He was a great power for
good and -he wielded it to Q10 best
advantage. He succeeded even ot the
eleventh-hour where others had fail-
ed. Troubles and family blckerings
some ol which baffled the courts
then, fell to the lot of the good Bls-_
hop to settle a,-mlcably, some oi‘them
being Protestant families. _
On the Labrador coast' in` the~dli-
ferent fishing _stations many disputes
among -the horny-handed sous, of toil
on that rugged and bleak coast were,
put aside»snd things. smoothed over
calmly when His Lordship was the
judge. ‘ The consolations of religion
were brought to thousands during the
fishing season around the territory of
Labrador. With the ilshermen,
though he was a Bishop, yet for
them~ he labored as a humble priest,
and no sacrifice was too great for
him to undergo to bring the help of
religion. »
When he was about to leave for
Harbor Grace, where be had spent a
quarter of a century, Protestants and
Catholics alike presented him with
addresses, but under no 'consideration
would he accept any monetary gifts.
He was one of the few Bishops in the
Catholic Church to-day who liycd on
his resources never asking the _cus-
tomary tlthes from the priests of his
