For every Pig kept in the said City in viola- tion of the foreguing section the owner or keeper of slave mothers. The third localizes oy. new freedom within their country for two ears.. The fourth empowers the executive issue the necessary regulations, The fifth rave ll the contrary provisions. It is estimated that the law emancipates over 600,000 slaves and relieves from appren- ticeship about 400,000 children of slave mothers. A London barrister was recently sum- moned before the Benchers charged with the serious professional offence of accepting a fee of half a guinea when his briet was marked with a guinea. ‘The offender was severely reprimanded, and informed that he had departed from ‘‘ the best traditions of the Bar.” He respectfully urged that heyhad imagined’that he was following “‘ the best traditions of the Bar,” inasmuch as he had taken all he could get. So Grover Cleveland has been unani- mously*nominated the Democratic Candi- datet for President of the United States. This is just what was expected. Cleveland has grown immensely in popularity since his election four years ago, and although some little opposition to his candidature apartment, up town, but the surroundings did not deter the low church pastor. He was going to fight the devil and his works wher- ever he might find them. The name suggest- ed nothing, for there are Potters and Potters, as well as Smiths and Smiths, both common enough trades in the days when a man’s sur- name indicated his occupation. The candi- date was not in, but her mother appeared. after an appropriate conversation, the young clergyman said : ‘* Where does your husband attend church ?” “* Well he attends none regularly.” ** Very bad, very bad,” said the minister severely. ‘* This habit of running about is pernicious, Is he a church communicant ?” “Ta ‘* Worse still ; and what views does he hold? Is he high or low, or (with a broad upheaval of his somewhat narrow chest) is he a Churchman ?” ‘* Ah,” satd the Bishop's wife, ** indeed sir, 1 do not know ; he is, however, the assis- tant bishop of this diocese, to which, think, you belong.
