AN HISTORIAL PLAGE.- Situat- cd on the farm of Mr. John McKen- zie, Scotch Fort, with the shadow of the trees that grows thereon almost resting on the Lpacid waters of the Hilliborough R ver, 1ies_ a burying ground that is known to ma,ny as 'one of the most, if not the most, historical spot on 1'. E. Island. One has merely to take as walk through it to have some of its history rc- vealed ‘to them. Instead of the mar- ble and granite headstones of today the visitor finds the common red‘ sand `stonc, which is so numerous in the eastern part' of the Island, mark- ing the resting place of people who have passed from. this world- to .the great beyond, many, many years ago Indeed there are dates to be found back as far as the year 1727, almost two‘ hundred years ago. The cemet- ery which covers about a half an acre is looked after and kept in 'or- der by the people of Tracadie parish. There are numerous large trees in it principally all white and black spruce which have been underbushcd up a distance or about ten feet from the ground. There is also a wiro fence surrounding it and spepi-.il men- tion might be made of the large mar- ble monument which was placed there in memory of the Macllwnclls who were buried there.\ The base of this monument above is said to weigh`about two ton and the inscrip- tions which are on_ the four sldcs can bc seen today almost as plain as the day they were put on. There has been no one buried in this cemetery for over forty years nor hardly ever will be again as this was said to be the first French i Catholic burying ground on the Island, consequently it can be better imagined than des- cribed the many changes which have taken place since the first one was hurled in lt.-S \ PERSONAL i Miss E.
