The gcssips who usually retail second hand Btories, were sure that this time at least, the news was ;rue. The opposition were in extacier at the prosyect of a change, while tne officials fathe “Building” looked equally de; ressed and gloomy. The cause ef all the talk was that Mr Howlan, in his place in the Executive Council, brought ap the subject of a grant for the schools urder the coutrol of the Bishop. The Government, as usual, refused to entertain the question. All the members thereof, ex cepting two (Messrs. The Halifax Philharmonie Society is com-| posed, we believe, of about 120 ladies aud | gentlemen, | ——_ ee The Entertainment of the Literary and | Debating Suciety, in aid of the Wacian Monu- | jment Fund, came off on Monday evening, aa | jannounced, The audience wae highly reepect- lab'e, theush not quite so numerous as could be idesired The programme was not too varied; | but the length of some of the essays and ree:ta- | tiene, protracted the entertainment to nearly 11} o'clock. The Presidert’s opening remarks were | ; i was moved by the Hen George Boer, M. L. C., seconded by Thomas Essery, Exq., and unani- mously Resolved, that this meeting de organize itself iute an Agricultural Seeiety, tv be calied the Queen's County Agricakural Society. On owtion of Charles Palmer, Esq, the fol lowing was adopted as a basse of the constitution and objects of the Suciety :— The cbjects of the Suciety shall be to hold exhibitions of Cattle, Corn, Roote, and other objects, and offer premiums therefor; to procure aud diaseninate accurate milormativa, xf -eting the interests of ayreulture; il necessary to mm port, ty order, seeds and implementa, and to assist generally.the tocal government in carrying jout Exhibitions of lveal industry, ploughing matches, and the breeding of lve stuck at the Stock Farm, and such other objects as the nature of the Society shall require. That the said Society do consist of a President three Vice Preridents and members; and that an gre: t of asmall sum of money in aid of Catholic | conceived in a good spirit; the original puctry of | aanual subscription of 63 be paid by each mew rchcols,be promptly teadered his resignation as a member of the Government. It was supposed in the event of his resignation being accepted, that all the Catholic supporters of the Govern met would follow him,and as a matter «.f course there would be a smash up. However, the difficulty was patched up, by Mr. Hersley re- fusing to accept Mr. Howlan’s resignation, and the happy family are again in working order, It is currently reported that the Hoa. A. A. Mc Donald voted against the B:shop’s applica- tion. We can scareely believe that there is any frath in the rumor. We were aiways under the impression that Mr. McDonald was an ardent supporter of a grant in aid of Catho- lic schools. If, however, the conduct atiri- buted to him be true, we can only say that it is no wonder rigid Presbyterians oppose the gucstion of a grant. A “ house divided against ttc lf,”” de is an old adage having the weight of scripture attached to it. How then can Catholics #xpect to obtain their just rights when they are not trae to themselves? The question of a girant in aid of St. Dunstan’s College is simple gastice. No Catholic need be ashamed to ad- vocate it, A properly constitat’d Government woald rot refuse it for an instant. On the ground of principle it is justice itself. On the ground of expediency and gratitude it is equally just, and if it were not that the Presbyterian element predominates in the Councils of the Country it would hardly ve refused. We neyer could understand what it is that causes Presby- terians to have such a dislike to gige aid or comtort to Catholicity? Can it be that they wish tu keep the Catholic portion of the popu- Jation in ignorance? or is it from some inherent dwlike known only to themselves? From " whatever cause the dislike proceeds it appears that they are the most determined enemies to the question of a grant of mouey in aid of Catholic Schools, This week we do not wish to pursue the subject, At another time we moay lave occasion tu give our views at greater jeagth upen it en tee : Tm editor of the Progress ought to be very mach obliged to us for giving him material out of which to manufacture a two column article in his issue of the 22nd inst. Indeed we do not know what he would do for thunder were it not for the much abused Examiner. We are sure Mr. Kirwan himself feeis thankful to us for giving him a little notoriety. He was ong enough vegetating in obscurity until we took him in hand. Whenever the Summerside animal becomes toc obnoxious, and we want a little diversion, we giir him up with a long pole. At such times it is amusing to witness his contortions. This week we will allow him '® little repose, as he must be very ‘fatigued efter the violent exertions which be hus re- cently undergone. The difficulty of protecting the fish is the ebiet one. Let the Government pass the requisite laws. and sell ‘by auction the ex- clusive right to the salmon in the several rivers of the Island, and ere long we shal! have abundance of salmon, and a new branch of industry,—a new source of wealth will kaye been created without any cost to the revenue, and by the withdrawal, for the general good, of individual privileges now little mere than veunnal and altogether vuluciess TD pre We understand the Messrs Palmer have offered their portion of Lot 1, for ssle to the Government.
