———__—— = eT MISCELLANEOUS. Hency Greville has written eig!it novels within three years. ; A majority of the mills in Lancashire are \ orking short time. It is estimated that Talmage addressed upwards of 80,000 persens 1n London last week. Tue empress Eugenie ‘has issued an address to the English people, thanking them for the] sympathy shown in her recent affliction. Latest returns from Natal atate that two- thirds of the men and half the officers of the “lst Princess Louise’s Regiment are down with sickness. Ara meeting of Hyde heirs in Halifax on the 16th inst,, the original warrant signed by the Duke of Argyll, grandfather of Lord Lorne, about possession of which there has been so much dispute, was produced. There was a general meeting of the heirs in Moncton on Thursday. Ruyep vy Prorecrion.—Says the New York Sun of Wednesday :—‘‘An English man is prospecting along the line of the Hudson River for a site for a linen mill, wich it is pro- posed to remove from England. It is said that the mill employs 2,000 men. England is the great and prospering Free Trade nation. America is the “black ruin” abode of the apostles of Protection. At least this is the idea promulgated by the true Canadian Grit politician. A sad case, indeed, is that of the Black- burn family, in this city. We learn that Blackburn himself is now in jail for debt, and. that his son—16 years of age—occupy- ag apartments in the same institution, for theft. But worse than either ofthese cases —though they are bad enough—is that of Mrs. Blackburn, who was sent to jail for three months on Wednesday last for keep- ing a brothel, and three little children are thus threwn upon the cold charity of the world. The drink demon has been. instru- mental in causing the ruin—moral and other wise-—of this family.— Argus. lf there is any quality which should shield well-won popularity from the shafts of envy, itis modesty. It is this quality which has gone far te ensure for Hanlan both in England and in the United States, receptions almost equaling in enthusiasm those which he has a right to claim in his own land. On this point the New York ‘‘Evening Times” says: ‘‘ The oarsman, Hanlan, appears to be as modest and sensible in conversation as he is expert in a racing-shell. In his conversation with our reporter, yesterday, he had only good words to utter about his nautical rivals, and at his reception at the Madison Square Garden, last evening, he simply returned thanks for the warmth with which he was greeted.” Either General Butler was in unusually bad humor when he penned the following letter or the treatment of veteran soldiers by the American Government gives abund- ant scope fur the enactment of the part of the traditional jBelisarius. It was written in reply to the application of a lawyer who resides in Cincinnati : ‘* You ask me in yeur note if [| know ef a position for a one- legged soldier. LIanswer I donot. Nearly two years age I asked a positien of Presi dent Hayes for a crippled soldier in my neighborhood, backed by all his neigh- bors. Mr. Hayes refused it, and gave position to a man _ who stayed at home during the war, at the re- quest of Mr. Hoar, Senator from vur State, whe stayed at home, teo. Since that time [ have asked of Mr. Hayes nothing. The law is imperative that he should prefer, in all official appointments, the maimed Veterans of the war, but that law is not obeyed. I got an Act through the House when I was in Congress making @ penalty of fine and imprisonment for not obeying it, but it failed in the Senate. The people in the Confederate States do better. They give all their prominent offices to their crippled and other Confederate sol- diers. It seems to be the misfortune of your friend that he fought en the wrong side te get any recognition of his services. I am grieved, therefore, that I am not able to do anything for him.” Liver is King. The liver is the imperial organ of the whole human system, as it controls the life, health and happiness of man. When it is disturbed in its proper action, all kinds of ailments are the natural result. The di- gestion of food, the movements of the heart and blood, the action of the brain and ner- vous system, are all immediately connected with the workings of the liver. It has been successfully proved that Green’s August Flower is unequalled in curing all persons afflicted with dyspepsia or liver complaint, and all the numerous symptoms that result from an unhealthy condition of the liver and stomach. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— Dear Srr—It is now two years since your ‘‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced to me. I have waited this ong to see if the eure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be ‘‘teo good to true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh, In reading in yeur Circular I saw my case described.in many par ticulars, The inward “ ” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like puptherng com be compelled to sit upin thebed. My and spirits were seriously*affected. When your agent came te Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- hef, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head. A sense of duty to sufferers from that leath- some disease, Catarrh, prom me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, W.
