' ' AruELetics.—A letter received here by the friends of Mr. William Doyle, from Vancouver, has a programme of sports which took place on the 27th of Augus', in which several] of our Island boys had a prominent part. William Flood, a young athelete from Charlottetown, takes a fore- most position, taking first prize in the 16lb shot throwing, the distance being 34ft, 10in, and second in the 440 yds foot race. He also recived a medal) as first prize for dancivg the Irish Washerwoman. Mr. Doyle speaks of Flood as “quite a hustler” and a credit to the Island. From the same reliable source we also learn that Mr. ' Charles Reardon is winning konors in the ) West having takeu first place in the pole vaulting ‘‘dead easy” 9ft 4in. A ycug man named Reuben Watts, also from the Island, wou first prize for dancing the Highland Fling with William Doyle second, winning a pipe, a very appropriate prize for him. We extend them all con-~ gratulat'ons and encourage them to keep up the reputation of the Isiand in the Far West as it ig in almost every quarter of the Globe. ; oF A STRIKING ISSUE. The tendency of educated Canadians to study and write apon important subjects is clearly proven in the September Canadian Magaziue. It contains four illustrated stories and a beautifully illustrated article on Jamaica. But the rest of the jasne is taken up wih learned, the ugh brightly written, articles as follows: The St. Law- rence Route and the Manitoba Grain Trade by Edward Farrer; Canada’s inter~ national Status by Sir Charles Hibbert Tupper; Failure of the Ausiralian Federa- tion Bill by W. A. Fitchett; The Members of the first Dominion Parliament (witb portraits and auiographs) by Sir Jobo G. Bourinot, A Review of R. G. Haliburton’s Scientific Discoveries by Norman Patter- 80D; The Champlain Monument, with ful! page picture, by Arthur G. Doherty; Great Britain and Russia by Charles Frederick Hamilton; and Current Events Abroad by Jobn A. Ewan, The quality of each of these articles is beyond criticism, and the matter is exceedingly impertart The Frontispiece is a splendid reproduction of a copywright protograph of the late Arch- bishop Walsh. The whole number is beautifully illus rated and printed. - 2 ee DYSPEPSIA CLUTCH—Dr Von Stan’s Pineapple Tablets are nature’s most wonu- derful remedy for all disorders of the sto mach. When men meet, the greeting usually is,“*Well, how are you?” That develops health talk. The man who has no bowel or stomach trouble is almost a curiosity. Trouble ie men take no care of themselves. They eat as though they had copper stomachs and bowels of brass. By oat by, over-worked nature rebels. Then come headaches, nervousnese had blood, liver and kidney troubles. PROWSE BROTHERS The Wonderful Cheap Men Métallizing Wood. A method of metallizing wood, om by which it becomes very solid and re- sistant and assumes the appearance of a true metallic mirror, is described in the Paris Monde with much detail. Briefly, the wood is first immersed for three or four days, as may be its degree of per- meability, in a caustic alkaline lye, and thence passed immediately into a bath of hydrosulphite of calcium, to which is added, after 24 or 36 hours, concen- trated solution of sulphur in caustic potash. The duration of this bath is about 48 hours, and its temperature is from 55 to 50 degrees. Finally the wood fs immersed for 30 or 40 hours in a hot | solution of acetate of lead The wood prepared in thia manner and after hav- ing undergone a proper drying at a moderate temperature acquires under a burnisher of hard wood a polished sur- face and exhibits a very brilliant metal- lic Juster—a luster still further increas- ed in its attractiveness if the surface of the wood be rubbed thoroughly, in the first place, with a piece of lead, tin or zinc and afterward be polished with a glass or porcelain burnishgr.
