EAGLES ON THE PODIUM Eagies were on the podium and the projection screen at the Farm Centre when Mr. Geraid MacDougaTi provided members and guests of the Society with a presentation on the Baid Eagie. Geraid, a Conservation Officer with the P.E.I. Fish and Niidiife Division, used siides, overhead projections, and displays to show how the eagie nest trees were ciimbed and the eagiets were banded. He indicated that in 1989 there were seven active eagies nests know on Prince Edward Isiand. Six of these were successful in raising 10 eagiets. This is a dramatic increase from the singie nest which existed from 1978 to 1981 and shows how a species can respond when appropriate precautions are taken to protect wiidiife and its habitat. In response to questions, Geraid indicated that the Society's members can assist by reporting eagTe nests to the Division (368-4684) and by ensuring that their nests are not disturbed during the March to July nesting period. The Tatter precaution is very important as Bald Eagies usuaiiy return to the same nest and they wiii often abandon nests if they are disturbed during the incubation and eariy stages of rearing. Shouid you be one of those IsTanders fortunate enough to have an eagie nesting on or near your property you can offer them Tonger term protection by setting the site aside for their use.
