Governor Haviland proposed that there be held an Exhibition of the productions of all the Maritime Provinces. The suggestion is undoubtedly worthy of serious considera- tion. The more the people of this portion of Canada see of each other, the more they see of each other's productions, the greater the respect they will have for each other, and each other's resources and capabilities, while the wholesome emulation which an Exhibition canuot but be beneficial to all. will excite, titling Nitilnaiiet THe St. John Sua says: ‘‘ A very good exhibit of sheep came from Prince Edward island, Mr. Albert Boswell, of Lot 49, showing 10 fine Leicesters. Mr. Long- worth exhibited 10 Leicesters, 9 Shrop- shires, 3 Southdowns, and 3 Cotswolds. These sheep were much admired, and they were reported on in highly complimentary terms by the Judges.” The Sn also says, ** Prince KHdward Island was well repre- sented in its vegetables, all of which were very fine, ‘‘ the biggest beet” belonging to it. The movement has assumed shape. An enormous meeting was lately held at Lincoln Hall, and measures deter- mined on which will result in bringing before Congress. the most powerful lobby interest, without cash suppert, ever known. The figures given by a speaker at last nights meeting were as follows ‘‘there are in Washington, 600 restaurants, 60 hotel bars, ' 120 drug stores, 1200 grocery stores, at all | of which liquor is sold at retail.” The effort { te be made at the next session of Congress, and, if unsuccessful then, to be repeated, is said to be such as the total abstinence people of the neighborhood never dreamed of, scclclesicbapesiiaaenmad Wlhaiiiechphlebectsie Tue ‘* Haggas elevator,” for supplying locomotives with water, has recently been added to the plant of the Island Railway. It seeins to be a marked improvement on the tanks with which the railway was at first supplied. It dees away with the necessity of pumping water into frost proof tanks. The water is kept in a tank under- ground, into which it flows by the law of gravitation ; and a pipe leads from this tank to the side of the railway track, When the locomotive comes up te take water, all that has to be done is to connect the pipe leading from the tank with a pipe attached tothe engine. Then leton steam, which exhausts the air in the pipe, and the water comes up at once. The primary ad- vantage the Haggas Elevator has over the tank,. into which the water has to be pumped, is that the first cost and the cost of maintenance are both less. ge M. Tirard, French Minister of Agri- culture and Commerce, has ordered the translation and cirenJation of Messrs. Read and Pell’s report on American farming. A fire on Wednesday night, in a worst- ed mill in Greenock, caused damage to the extent of £50,000. Nine hundred per- sons are thrown ont of employment. Speech of the Lieutenant Governor. HE PROPOSES A MAKITIME EXHIBITION. a Tue speech of His Honor the Lieutenant Governor, at the dinner given in the Royal Hotel, St. John, is thus reported by the St John Telegraph :— Governor Haviland, while protesting that members of his Government should do so, replied 19 a happy speech. He would sink the Goveanor and speak as a citizen of this Canada of ours and as a man. He was proud of the success of this partially Mari- time Exhibition; he was astonished with what he had seen in our manufactures of iren, wool, cotton, leather, wood, ete. It was clear that we had the elements of inde- pendence within ourselves, and could have most of the comforts and even the luxuries of life without going elsewhere. (applause) Still, continued the Governor, speaking as a man, and not for any Government, he would say let us have a bona fide Maritime Exhibition (cheers); one which the Gov- ernments of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick andPrince Edward [sland should jointly sustain by grants of money; «nein which their industries, arts and agriculture could: enter into competition (cheers); so that it might be seen what each could do best (cheers), At the risk of offend- ing or being thought invidious, he would say, let it beheld in the ample buildings and grounds of the Exhibition now in pro. gress in St. John. (Great Applause.) He thought in that case Prince Edward Is- land would do her share. (Applause.) Turning to general topics, he said he be- lieved that the Maritime Provinces had greater influence, more power and’ wealth, as part of the great Dominion than when they were so many separate Provinces, with so many different tariffs and any number of petty Custom House restrictions. Some particular interests might suffer, but there was a gain on the whole, and our object should be to develop a natienal spirit, u'ilze our resources and consolidate this yreat Dominion. (Cheers,)' Senator Miller spoke for Nova Scotia, and complimented Governor Haviland, re- ciprocating his expression of national senti- ment. It appears, in regard to the tunnel con- nection between France and England, that the boring operation undertaken some time since at Sangette, on the French side, is not the beginning of the shaft from which the tunnel is to be bored, but is simply an experimental bore-hole, some 500 or yards above the village, and about 100 yards from the shore. It was found neces- sary, however, to suspend the werk be- cause of the too rapid infiltration of water, rendering essential the construction of @ new pump, ef double the capacity of the first one—that is, one capable of raising some 700 galions per minute. The actual shaft for the tunnel, when it it definitely begun, is, according to the plan at present contemplated, to be sunk in the village itself, and to such a depth as the experi- ments made shall show to be requisite. The preliminary shaft is to be sunk toa depth of 260 feet, the diameter of the bore being eleven foet. . °44e- --—--- — Later details from the North-West would seem to indicate that a severer struggle than at first supposed has taken place between the Canadian and American Indians. The trouble took place at Mis- souri Coteau, a range of hills extending from the international boundary in a northwesterly direction teward Old Wires Lake. The Canadians were from Ocean Man’s and White Bear’s band, niar Moese Mountain, seventy miles nerth-west of Fort Ellice, where they went down the international boundary in pursuit of buffalo. The Americans, comprising Man- dan and Gros Ventres from Montana, opened fire on the Canadian Indians with Winchester repeating rifles. The fight was kept up all day, all the small Canadians being killed, as well as a number of women and children. One American was found dead after the combat. On their retreat he was scalped, and a war dance took place over it at Fort Ellice. ~2_s----— -- ©, T. Acr.—-At Woodstock. N. B., the other day, a Mrs. Stephenson, was fined $50 and costs—in all $63-—for violating the Canada Temperance Act. Mr. B.S. Appleby who appeared for the prosecution, has re- ceived an anonymous letter, in which the writer threatens to take Mr. Appleby’s life on acconnt of his professional connection with liquor prosecutiens.
