FUR FARMING England, althoulgh neither a 3 large producer nor consumer of ’ furs, plays a prominent role on the world’s trade, and is the if largest exporter- of furs in the world. In 1951, she imported. 26, 752,000 pounds sterling worth of A . furs, and she exported 17,320,000 tice menus. Beverly has been v pounds sterling of furs. Of these, 5,504,000 pounds sterling worth were her own production, but a considerable portion of it had been processed in the United Kingdom. . The world’s oldest fur company -the Hudson’s Bay Company- was formed in the reign of Charles 11, and is still the largest pur- chaser and distributor of furs in the world. The H.B.C., at one time, owned a large part of Wes- tern Canada, but a great part of it was disposed of to form the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatch- ewan and Alberta. Despite its age, it has not, like many old companies ‘withered on the vine’ but seems as active and courageous in the fur world today as it has been at any time in our recollection. One afternoon in 1926, the gov- ernor of the company purchased a 51 percent interest in two fox ranches owned by lVIcLure and MacKinnon, and in 1937, they retsold their holdings to the local shareholders. The New York Auotion Comp- any concluded its sale last week and announced that 98 per- cent of the 69,000 Plalstel types in that collection was disposed of. They stated that the demand was very firm compared to April, with good attendance and wide- spread buying. In earlier selling, Azurene types, including Winter Blue, males was $75 and $36 for females. Stewarts were 96 percent sold with a top price for males of $35 and $15.25 for females, Breath of Springs sold 80 percent with males selling at a top price of $33.50 and females bringin-g $14. 50.‘ Salesroom talk was that the market is still ‘cutting up’ as much Pastel as it available, par- ticularly Pastel goods sold in the miscellaneous offerings. Any fears that the large quant- ities of Pastels offered this sea- son would take the edge off the market’s ability to digest the goods, continues to be proven in- correct. U.S. IMPORTS The United States, despite its position as the largest producer of furs in the World, is also credited by an American author- ity, as being the leading importer He claims that United States leads all countries in the value of its imports for furs for the past three decades. It had always been our belief that Great Britain was the largest importer of furs in the world. The 29th International Fur Auc- tion will be held at Leningrad, Russia, on July 23, 1958, it has been announced by the Amtorgv Street, New York. SABLE A The biggest item in the cata- logue is 750,000 muskrat. Also offered is 10,000 Russian Sable; this fur is produced exclusively in Russia, and the greatest pre- cautions have been taken to pre- vent Sable being sold and taken alive out of the country. Years ago, Dr. Leo Frank made a trip to Russia with the object of toad- ing Prince Edward Island silver tax for Russian sable. It appear- ed that it was likely to be ,a deal, but eventually fell through and — at Holma.n’s. the Doctor’: silver fox Went 00 Japan, instead. . This province is free from mink distemper, unlike the United Stat- es where mink ranchers have to be acquainted with such drugs as penicillin, terramycin, aureo- mycin, and the use of ointments that are a combination of penic- illin, streptomycin or terramycln. In the Western United States they vaccinate for distemper in January, and many include vacc- ination for botulism. In Febuary they check their mink very thoroughly, getting them down in shape for March; that is, they don’t allow them to get too flat. A female will not reprodnce or give birth is she is too fat, or many will die in birth. Another trouble is mastitis. This is treated ‘with an oitment especially prepared for that pur- pose, and also used to_ treat dairy cows. It contains treramycine or other drugs mentioned above.
