The proper plan for building uv ¢0\ul-
try life is to build from the inside,
to draw out the love of nature which
nearly ali country people have. They
must be taught by science to ses how

the coal-bln are ever in sight and
must be provided for.
A more sane plan for "building up
country life" would probably be sug-
gested' by the country blacksmith,
the harness-maker, the tailor, the
shoe-maker, the tradcsman, whose
small fee for a job of work is beaten
down to the vanishing point by a
well-to-do customer.
Into a harnessmaker's shop in a
village in this province one day a
farmer brought a set of old harness
to be repaired. The job was finished
in exactly one_ hour and a half.
"How much?" asked the farmer.
"Thirty cents," meekly replied the
harness-maker. "Tbat’s outrageous,"
said the farmer, "lt was only n
couple of old straps and a buckle.
‘Ten cents ought to be enough." An
argument which consumed another
half hour ended in a compromise, the
Price being fixed at fifteen cents.
That harness-maker and his family
are now in a citv in Western Canada.
