Its object is to get Mrs. Mavybrick, the husband poisoner, out of Two successive home secretaries in two successiue governments have re- fused to interfere in her case, and the hances are that the present holder of the office will not depart from the precedent thus set. There is a strong prejudice in England in favor of the idea that a jury 1s prison, than an agitator. Virtue and Value of Tillage—Seating the tiny Channels by Which the Earth's Water BE .capes Wir t lhe Crops Cost ina lb). tferent Sections. it is well known that cultivation pre- moisture, but the differ- nee in the retention of mois- between a hard and compact soi! and one that has been lo>sened with the plow or cultivator is greater than nay be supposed by those who have not nts toss of loss or given the subject their consider. tion. Professor Babcock, of the Wisconsin Experimental. Station found that a piece of unplowed ground lost in seven days in early May as much as 1,304 pounds of watér per day, while in July the loss was ne. rly 31 tons daily, which was sufficient for the growth of a ton of @ry matter of corn every ten days. The water in hard soi.s is brought to tix surface through capilliary tubes. The more compact the soil the finer and more numerous these tubes, whi h draw itso from the sub-areas. It is also known as a fact that water applied to the surface so that it not reach the lower roots, serves but to deprive the roots of moisture as such water draws more water to the surface than that below, does DEEP The experiments made to determin the results of deep ploughing in rela- tion to moisture demonstrated that evaporation was decreased by plough- ing. A plot that was plowed lost but 4.65 tons of water from one foot of the TILLAGE PRESERVES MOPTUR |, surface, while an gdjoining plot that was unplowed lost 19.89 tens. It is im portant, therefore, to plow early, as th: mulch made by the p!ow hoids in the depths below a reserve of water whe is thus checked in its progress of ev p- Oration. It was demonstrated thai fall plowing reserved in the ground nearly 55 tons more water per acre thai unplowed ground. The plow is superio to the cultivator in mulching the soil, #s it cuts off the surface to quite ; depth and deposits it . gain wholly severed from the g:ound below. Thi Value of the moisture saved or re- tained in the soll is an {ftem to be con- sidered in plowing, and the work must be done with due regard to the futur effects on the soil as a preventive of loss during periods of drought. CULTIVATION PRiVENES LSS. As there are many millions of smai tubes in an acre of soil (the water ris- ing to the surface by capillary attrac- tion), the prevention of loss when th: soil is cultivatedis due to the breaking off of the upper ends of tie tubes and closing each with a deposit of earth, sealing them, so to say~—.nd when th earth again becomes compacted and th tubes are again opened the cultivato repeats the same process of closine them. Deep tillage holds moisture bet- ter thay shallow tillage, but deep tillag: may damage some crops by reot-cut- ting. When the land is plowed to a depth of six inches and the crop given deep cultivation in the early stages of growth of crops, shallow cultivation is proper. The cultivator, then, is not only a weed destroyer, but prev« moisture by producing a covering ot leqse earth over the soil and fortifying the crop against dry periods. Individ ual farmers, however, must be guided by the kinds of soils and the climate, but it is safe to claim that frequent cultivation gives good results on all farms. nts loss of —_--——_—— THE CO+1 OF CROPS. Valuable Statistics Compiled by the Ohi: Department The consolidated returns from ove: 4,000 experts and 30,000 farmers to th: Ohio Department of Agriculture show that the average cost of ra’sing an acre of wheat in New England is about $20 in the Middle States $18, in the South ern States $11, in the Western States $11, in the Mountain Btates $16, and in the Pacific tates $12. In New England an acre oc corn costs $28, in the Mid- dle tates $21, in the Southern States $12, in the Western States $11, in th: Mountain States $12, and in the Pa- cifie States $18. The tot 1 average cost of an acre of wheat is $11.48 and o corn $11.71, The av2rage repot paced the average value of wheat at $6.16 per acre and corn at $8,21 per acre, which coes not, however, include the straw and fodder Many of the “coneentr ted foods” solid on the market for horses, cattle, sheep, swine and -poultry, consist ar parently of a mixture of ground wheat end corn, with 13 per cent. of salt, and perhaps a little of some more concen- trated food, says a report of the Con- necticut Experiment Station, It is sold at the rate of $100 per ton in large lots, and $160 per ton in small quantities. It may b° added that linseed meal is also an important ingredient in such foods, and it is nearly always benefi- cial to animals. The actual cost of an article in raw materials, taken from the farm (not in- ‘lud ng labor, etc.), regulates the profit, as that which is unsold rem ins in the :o.1 for some succeeding crop. Experi- ments made with $160 worth of foods show that in figures representing the fertility sold, eggs cost the farmer $3.56, wheat $42,28, milk $14.08, chers: $18.38 and timothy had $95.81. This places the hens ahead of the cows, and shows ‘h.t ergs cost but little compared with i¢ prices obtained for them. Crab grass does the heaviest damage to o'd strawberry beds, but it can be usily kept down in the young beds. There is no way to get it out of old Leds after it secures a stand but to vull it up by hand just after a rain, and as it has a large root it causes damog to young plants th:t may be near. Cra!) grass is casjly destroyed when it first eppears, but it holds on persistently atter making headway in growth. The recent rains have given all crops en excelent send-off, and a good crop of corn should be secured; but the rains also serve well for the weed, and more cultivation muet be civen the so.! s0 as to prevent the weeds from start ing. Borne Down by a Eecleniless Foe, The great army of sufferers from vari- ous rheumatic conditions joyfully wel- come Chase's K. & L. Pills because the foster parents of their aches and pains are the Kidneys, which, on account of a diseased condition, are unable to relieve the blood of uric acid poison, which is deposited in the joints, producing on the first provocation irritating aches and ains in the bones, joints and muscles. The reason that Chase’s Pills relieve and cure is their wonderful power in restor- ing degenerate Kidneys to a perfect and Siament condition, without’which the sys- tem is supplied with blood teeming with poison that adds fuel to the fire of rheu- matic complaints, demoralizing the en- tire system and rendering it hable toa complication of diseases terminating in dropsy, diabetes, or Bright’s disease, A pleasant feature of these Pills is that, while most Kidney remedies encourage constipation, Chase's relieve and cure it. In nearly all rheumatic attacks there exists constipation of the bowels, which is easily over-come by Chase’s Kidneve Liver Pills; in fact, they are a perfect cure for censtipation.
