oe Be . ro 3 a ee a wa, The croquet season is supposed to be sett ng | io this year with unusually fine and encouray h prospects. Croquet has acquired an establishe position, like cricket or waltzing, or grouse shooting, and @iversions multiply their o pularity as rapidiy as capital multiplies its:/f. Besides, eroquet has solid und real expunga)ie claims to popularity. It is more than a diver. sion. [t is business. The author of the **MNew Handbook” is carried by the natural zeal of the specialist still further. Croquet, he sententious!y declares, ‘‘ has been elevated from @ pastime to the dignity of a seience.”’ Per-| haps this is a shade iv excess of the fact, unless the author proposes tu add to inductive and deductive a pew class of seductive sciences, in which clearly his own pursuit will be enticled | to « highly distinguished rank. <Auythag whieh furthers the development of man as a social animal merits the approva’ of the wise, and anything which brings young men and} young Women together must obviously develop their sociality. At croquet the stoic may smile avd the epicureau exult, while even the eric can say nothing worse than that it is much less a matter of social development than matter of trim aukles aud balmoral boots. | The author of the handbook untairly gives a} handle to the cynic, for he admits, with pro- | found serenity, that ‘‘ one of the most promi- | nent reasons of the pleasure that men take in the game is the sight with which they are in duiged of a neatly turned pair of ankles and a pretty pair of rous firtation in & pleasant diszuise, less perilous form than waltziuz, because w ing 18 an affair of two, and affairs of two be transferred from the harmless iuto the dan gerous in the twinkling of any eye. Croquet, | on the contrary, has the advantage of beinz an | adair of at least three. Two may play, it is trae, bat obviously to play tele a-tete would be tantamount to an of an ap yroaching alliance in the Owl or the Morning Sore ont mother with a proper sense of het duty could tolerate such intimacy in a needy man, and no man who was not needy would | boots’ Croquet is highly deco It is a) itz aay | advertisement allow himse!f to fall into such iadiscretion In an ordinary way a croquet party consists of eight, and no swaiu or maiden can run into too grave flictations in the sight and within earshot of six other persons. A man with pro- found experience in ballroom flirtations may | find all his experieuce useless and all his skiil | haffed in the mure wholesome atmosphere of the croquet sr und, 1 ne open @ir aiways checks excessive emotion, and the affectation ef emotion which passes muster by the light of | wax candies is insufferable and absurd under the light of the sun. Life has a very diferent aspect at two in the morning from that which it presents at four o'clock in the afternoon. | Then, again, at croquet champagne does not flow, and there is no music; aad a man who would plange headforemost into any matriimon- | ial or other gulf under the influence of sweet sounds, finds himself the soberest of beings when the click of the balls and the diaputing | voices of the players are the only music to be} heard. Sobriety is the prime characte istic | of croquet.—The flirtations which it perm:ts or | inculcates to its votaries is thoroughly seemly | and harmless. It is flirtation in which the | curate may 1adulge without compromising the | dignity of his austere profession, and at which «ven a rector may smile without forfeiting the | lofty majesty of his position. A bali-room| flirtation may end in anything up to an elope- | ment. The flirtation of the croquet-ground is| of the more modest kind, which cheers but} never inebriates. The writer of the “New | Haadbook,”’ with immense gravity, assures us| that *‘most men would undoubtedly ; refer | playing entirely with the people of their sex, rather than have the interest of the game spoil- ed by & lady who knows little or nothing about the rules. Was there ever a propcsition inthe world which stood in such need of qualifications and modifications, or which, without these, was so thoroughly incredible? The most hme imagination and the most imflamma. | le and elastic capacity of enthusiasm would | fail to find the pleasure of driving a ball throngh | a hoop at all comparable to the pleasure of teaching a goddess to do the same, or of scold- ang her if she proved herself incapable of \earu- tng. There is another effect referred to by the writer, cousequent upon the elevation of croquet to the rank of a science, and one in which we be.ieve much more willingly than in the alleged aoa uf a good game without ladies, toa ad game with them. Since croquet has be- come a science, ‘‘ it is now more often the cause of bickerinzs and quarrels than the commence- ment of love.” This is quite natural, and what ove might have enpastall lutent on making croquet something very subtie and crafty, aud protound and difficult, the compilers of manuals overlaid the primitive simplicity of the game with masses of rules, so that now a croquet snanval may be got of which it is ashard toacquire & kaowledge aa if it contained the lost books of Kuclid, or the body of English case-law. Just as uncertainty and complication iu the jaws of the land lead to litigation, so do uncer- tainty, intricacy, and confusivn in the laws of croquet lead to bickering and quarrels among people whose little hands were never made to tear each othes’s eyes. It is the greatest of merits in a game of any sort that it opens no door to doubtings and uncertainties. Cricket would be an impossible game if the wise fore- sight of our ancestors had not established the anthority of the umpire, whose decision is as prompt as it is beyond dispute. In croquet there would be a good deal of difficulty in per- suading anybody to be umpire. The invidious ness of such a position would be @ thing unequalled since the days of the Choice of Paris. Let us look at the kind of problem whith presents itself. Originally, the tight croquet was the only permissable mode. Now, you may have, besides this, both the loose croquet and the slipping croquet. This seems very simple. But there is a sect, pestilent as the Monophysites, or Nestorians, or Basilidians of the early church, which grimly holds that “to rovers ouly should the privilege of the loose eroquet be accorded.” Others, on the con: | trary, hold that the privilege should only be | a‘iowed to those who are notrovers. Anybody who understands human nature will see that a difference of this sort is enough to convulse the | best-regulated crouquet ground in England. | And any body can decide the controversey. Jt is desperate, and it is never ending, because } } by .0 ingenuity can we discover any atom of| _ principle by which to measure the contending | theories. Why should you not adopt the loose croquet in the case of a rover? Precisely, but then why should you? Again, some| heterodox players have introduced the practice | ‘of taking two off.” Thus, if the player | croquet a ball, he is allowed to drive his own | bali in any direction he pleases, without touch- | ing the croqued ball. After this he bas another } stroke, so that he is euabled to get close to| any ball on the ground. To our i: structor | this plan seems “so highly objectional|~,"’ sy | subversive of all gocd play,’ that he un- hesitatingly coudemns it. We acc pt hi dicium wth profound faith, the state of mind roper for things beyond the level of reuson- jng. The woxgt of it is that ladies, the great | pillars of croquet, detest this attitude, and if| they may not “ take two off,’’ will insist on having a reason why. They are content with | & very poor reason, we admit, but it is to be| feared in the most abstruse secrets of croquet even the shadow of a reason is wanting. The more simplicity the game preserves, the | more likely it is to meet the purpose for which at exists. because there will be thus the more time left for “ those delicate atttentions to the | fair sex’? which lend to croquet its effective charms.
