Market higher; ACURRENCIES MONTREAL (OP) — The U.S. dollar closed Monday at a dis- count of 3 29-32 per cent in terms of Canadian funds, up 1-32. Pound sterling 92.69%, down 3-16. U.S. dollar bid 96 1-16; asked 96 3-32. TORONTO TORONTO-(CP)'— The stock market backed off from its highs oi the day Monday in moderate trading. , Base metals reached new 1958 highs during the session but closed slightly down. West- ern Oils reached their peak of 142.69 at noon before sliding back to close at 142.36, ahead one- third. Base metals were the big los- ers, oflr almost one-half. Golds were a few decimal points eas- ier. Golds showed some signs at ral- lying towards the- close but never did get started. Senior mines kept base down. Intennatlonal Nickel pulled base metals oft, losing 1 at 80.. Fractional losses went t9 Nonanda and Steep Rock. There wasn’t too much action among speculative: with only three mines passing the 300,000 mark. OI'th'e three, Purdex was the only winner, up 4 cents at 34. Barnat lost 10 cents at $2.16 while Newl-Iosco was down 55 cents at $2.70. Western oil-s didn't show too much change on the day as sev- eral seiner issues went up and then lost most of their gains to profittaldng.
