I spoke once before about the death rate from appendix opera- tions increasing according to the delay in performing the operation; that whereas the death rate was nly l percent if operation was performed the first day after dis- covery of symptoms, that it was nearly l0 percent if delayed for three or four days. Drs. Bower and Clark report their almost half of this number the ap- pendix had burst before the case arrived at the hospital. Now this delay means danger, and be» saved that these physicians and others" are trying to warn the pub- lic about the signs of appendicitis. These twn provinces have capitol cities, Governors, Leu- islattires, Supreme Courts, CivllSer- vices, and Legislative Buildings of their own. Are they willing to sci-up all these simply to aggrandize Nova Scotia, and carry out. the sweet will of Mr. Hence Logan and Premier King? Aside from these considerations. Mr. hogan perpetrates s. lot of ab- surdities in his “twenty reasons." He would have his readersbelieve that the three Maritime Provinces are al- ready so homogeneous that they can come together under one government and pool their resources without dif- ficulty. This is untrue and absurd. Nova Scotia, a great mining province. derives most of its revenue from the royalty on coal, while New Brunswick depends mainly upon the receipts from her lumber lands. And Prince Edward-Island has neither coal nor lumber. What could be more diverse than these interests, which Mr. Lo- gan professes to think are common to the three provincesil? Again, the provinces across the Strait have‘ a system of mimicijaal government by county councils which the people of Prince Edward Island have so for refused to adopt. It is not necessary to cite further proofs of divergent interests in order to make it clear that Maritime Union would involve revolutionary changes in our entire system of government from top to bottom. Our fair Pro- vince would sacrifice much that our people hold most dear and withoutn single compensating gain. ,Thc Ottawa Ministers are still looking to Washington and going to Washington. The latest arrival over there is the Hon. Peter Hecnan, Canadian Minister of Labor. And he, we are told, "made n big hit" over there, but that is not news. Premier King himself and any of"his minis- tcrinl colleagues ulways make "big hits" and are received with open arms when they visit the United States capital. And why not? Being pro-American lilstcnd of pro-Cana- dian as they oilght to bc, they rm- recelved with honor and enthusiasm in a foreign capital that is not al- ways accorded to them on Canadian soil. - Once/a King Minister finds him- self under the Stars and Stripes he conveniently forgets the tariff war that Washington has carried on for a generation against Canada: forgets that Chicago is constantly stealing the water from the Canadian lakes and harbors, and is quite ready to fraternire with Big Bill Thompson himself whose anti-British proclivi- ties are readily forgotten and for- given because hc is, as he boasts. 100 per cent. It seems rather pitiful and degrading. this toadying to Washington and a foreign flag, but so it is under the King Govern- ment, and so it will be until the people of Canada awake and expel the toadles from power. The county jail is full of prisoners, the Supreme Court had at its latest sitting an i of crim- inal cases to try, and not since the prohibiiory lawwas ensctedl have so many convicts been sent f this province to the Maritime Peniteiiti- |-d!l\'v'.tl"li3’ ~. vomiting, and tightness and tenderness of abdominal walls. Nous-en. was present in some,,vom- iting in (liners, but pain was pre- sent always. - Tenderness over appendix was the irext nrost frequent symptom, being] present in rtbout 90 percent of the CiLSES. Besides the danger from delay. these physicians give warning rc- garding the danger from giving n lpxutive, castor oll or anything else.‘ During the year i926, over 92 per- cent uil oll patients who tliutl from o. poi-mutter! appendix had hucl lax- atives before ildllllSfllflli. Now what is the suggestion? In the presence of abdominal pain, give nothing by mouth. That an abdominal pain which persists over a. period of six hours is usual- ly serious. .
