Prov. Commissioner Reviews Progress 0t Seoul Movement Once again with Lhc celebration o! the aruiual Boy Scout-Girl Guide Week, nt l-leadiquartera o! the Boy Scouts Association our thoughts turn to the question an to wh-at progress has been made dur- ing the past year. The first and probably the most important stop was the closer llason wilh Dominion Headquart- ers st Ottawa. Ottawa has given exceptional encouragement and assistance at all times. Our second big sterp was the ap- pointment of a full-time Provin- cial Pield Commissioner, Mr. Wal- ter B. LePage. Mr. lsePage since his appointment has done consid- erable visiting to different areas of the Island. has assisted in org- anizing. and. is always willing and available to assist any community who is interested in promoting bub Packs and Scout Troops. During the year considerable improvement was made to the Provincial camp site at Camp Buchan. Buildings were renovat- ed. the water supply was in- creased, u second cookhouse was erected to enable two groups to use the camp site at the same time, and other minor repairs and improvements also were made. At Headquarters the filing sys- tem was completely checked and the approved system of keeping records installed. Provincial Head- quarters is also assisting the various Troupe and groups in their ordering from Dominion and it is pointed out that the Provincial Office is willing at any time to assist in making the work of the various Leaders. Group Committees. and ilbrecutlves as easy as possible. With four Oub Packs still to be heard from, and with irwo lccrut Troops in the process of organizing. our increase to date over last. year is as follows: Cubs. lee; Scouts. 133; Lone Scouts, o. Additional leaders for this year over last are eight in number and there are irwo more groups. -six more Cub Packs, and three more Tl-wpa than in 1947. There have lbeen only increases in numbers in every branch od the movement. with no decrease whatsoever. The most successful Apple Day iln tidstory was held during the year rand it is foreseen that this day will increase in popularity as the {years go on. To the press. radio stations. and tel-l who have assisted in promot- ing the Boy scout movement, Pro- rincial Headquarters is most grate- ful. and ns Provincial Commision- er 1’ would like to take this oppor- tunity of extending Headquarters‘ thanks to the boys for their loy- ally to the movement. and at the some time express our deepest gratitude to the fine body of young ladies and gentlemen who in serving as volunteer are giving of their time and cn- PEI], and doing such an excellent flfih. Chief Commu- sloiier of Canada conifiirzns the fact that a Guide Company spon- sored by t-he Catholic women's League of which Mrs. Maclntyre at that time was Area Director. was organized in 1923. It was known as 1st Charlottetown Com- pany St. Dunstan‘; The following year the 2nd Company St. Dunataifs was form- ed; this totalling ‘l8 Guides. with interesting Guiders, including Miss Margaret Jenkins now Mrs. Fred Taylor, a member out the Provin- cial Council. Miss Annie Walsh, Miss Mary Pineau and others. These Companies passed tests at iveeidy meetings, earned money for their uniforms and for camp. One camp at 'I‘racadie, 1924, a field. oecrvlce was held at which the Rev. Maurice MacDonald of- ficiated, also present was Bishop Olieary. The other Corran Ban in 1025 was most suc- cessfully run and conducted strict- ly according to G. G. Camp regu- lations. Both camps were run by Mlsa Florence Dorsey as Camp Cirmnandant. Mrs. Casey, then President of the, C. W. 1.... gave much assistance and encourage- ment to the 54 Guides who at- tended camp. Unfortunately that was the last. year of the C. W. L. Conupanies, the Gulders married or moved sway. In 1924-26 Com- panies were formed in Alberton and Tignlsti but unfortunately there is no further record of the Companies.
