Deaths in the United States for the past three days of blistering weather totalled at least 206 and the list was growing steadily as lll degrees was measured on the official thermometer at Aberdeen. S. D. Early afternoon from Michigan east to the sco- board scared toward new ingii marks for the year. Adrian, Mich, reported 106 degrees. New York City's 102:5 was a new all time top. Washington, D. C.. expected 100. Philadelphia pcrspircd in 101. Several eastern cities rouutccl temperatures their first heat deaths of the year. ‘ Precipitation ranging from it trace at Rapid City, S. D,, to 2.42 inches at Effingham, Ill., stirred hopes for late and forage crops. But the rains weren't enough. said forecaster J. R. Lloyd of the said that while more rains were sighted for North Dakota, parts of Mmcwta, Wisconsin, and upper Michigan tonight or tomorrow, they would have not material ef- fect on the general drought. The (ll'y spell, which already has rolled up losses exceeding $300,- 000,000 aud made government de- pendents of 204,000 farm families, continued to dominate the domes- tic grain trade. Wheat resumed its advance after yesterday's setbacks, when later advices from Canada indicated that 10,000,000 to 12,000,000 acres of prairie wheat were still in grave danger despite Wednesday's rains. July delivery closed here at $1.06 1-8 to 1-4, with prices generally 3-8 to 1 5-8 higher. About 20 cents a. bushel has been added to wheat's value here since drought destruction got underway in the northwest spring wheat belt at month ago. Late ficlrl reports continued to emphasize need for rain within a week if the important corn crop was to be saved. New York's conoem over a pos- siblo scarcity of milk and other foodstuffs in the metropolitan area prompted state agriculture coinlnissioner Peter ’Ilen Eyck to call a cnnfereme for Saturday to discuss the situation.
