Because they illll not heed the advice of their riurior when he tells them to ...aL;r it easy". if mu want to save the Doc's you you can check up on your own air-art condition by observing slew simple rules. If your heart goes into a gallcp when you are as. cending a flight of stairs, two steps at a time. try taking only one step at n. time. If without any apparent cause, your heart starts racing like a politician af- ter s. vote, put out the white flag. Keep a check on feet and nnkles for swelling. and brcathlessne.-s when you're doing nothing more strenuous than resting your feet on the table. But if you have any of these symptoms. play it safe. you I. doc- tor and follow his advice. Other- wise the undertaker my get you at a time in life when you should be kicking up your heels and hav- ing a gala time. Don't be one of the four persons now livirg to die of heart trouble. Take it easy. Relax-and stay alive. 0 O 0 Trouble with most of us is that we've forgotten how to relax. even at mealtime. The other day I dropped into my favorite restaur- ant in Charlottetown and, like most of the others present. began to bolt my food. The way we forked it into our mouths you'd think the waitresses were going to take it away from us. Up until comparatively recently courting was quite a long-d:rs.wn- out process. Today there seems to be no time for love. The aver- age husband's idea of affection is n bird-like peck on his wife's cheek (if his aim is good). Par- ents don't have to tap on the Stovepipe for Mary and John to break up their lovely-dovey stuff downstairs. In fact. John hardly lingers long enough for the old folks to get well acquainted with their future son-in-law. Things were not that. way thirty or forty yous ago, which may help to sooount for the fact that our parents had healthier hearts at '70 than some younger folk have today at 20. O O I But, don't get discouraged even if you have a faulty ticker. You can live a long and useful lifeb- providing you take your doctor's advice and learn to slow up a. bit in this rush-and-bustle age. which isn't always easy. Read right here and now this counsel from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and the American Heart Association: "Cultivating a serene, optimistic outlook on life helps a great deal in relieving an impaired heart of unnecessary strain. This may be difficult for persons who have al- ways been high-strur.:g, quick on the emotional trigger, prone to work too hard or worry too much. Yet the people who are willing to slow up their previous living pace -who go ahead with less speed. lass worry, less fear; who accept the situation and adjust to it cheerfully. coaxing their hearts nlonsz without letting their im- pairment become an obsession- these are the people who have the best chance of a full. happy and prolonged existence despite heart trouble. 0 0 O Lon: before the day was divided into 24 hours people told time by the sun. Then they used such phrases as "at day-break", Hat mid day" (when the sun had reached the highest point in the llea'.'BllSl. "at sunset”. "at twi- light" and ”after sunset". The clock in the heavens served well enough ss a means for reck- oninlz the time of day in by-gone .i.imas. but. in our generation the whole world would go haywire if for some unknown reason. the clocks and watches of the world refused to run. There would be only a tiny percentage of these would ever be recorded. Factory work would be disorganized. in- stitutions would be thrown -off schedule and this bury. hurly-burly world would come to I complete standstill-if the timepieces of to- day suddenly went on strike. So, you see, under our present set-up we can't get along without our accurate timepieces to tell us when we ought to start our day's "Any fool can make a. rule And every fool will mind it." -Thoreau. O O O A phantom ship haunt: the wet- ers of! Gaps dlllispair. in Gaspe Bay. Once every year the strange vessel is sighted. its decks peopled with bearded men, while at the bow stands a man with I. female leaning on his anm. Then the lights blink out and the phantom ship grad-ually sinks below the surface. The legend behind this amazing story is this: the vessel is the ghost of s. British flagship sent to attack the French forts on our eastern seaboard but instead went to Davy Jones looker with all hands. In pioneer days in this province people went to bed early and got up with the roaster. Not at his first crowing. however. which gen- erally takes place in the dead of nightr-and in olchn times was known as "first crow". some hours later the live nlsmi i-lock sounded again and again.
