The plant is located on Grafton street East near the railway cross- ing. six men are employed through money to come to the Court. He said that he had told the witnesses that they would not be losing a. day's work to come up to the Court as they would get $2.50 witness fees. He denied oflerlng any one any mon- ey. One witness for the defense was called in rebuttal by the defense. Mr. L. G. Lewis then addressed the Jury on behalf of the prisoners. He stated the case was a difficult one and that the defensq had been forced to disclose their evidence which they had reserved at the preliminary hear- ing, as the case hsd been brought up in flhg prohibition court, and unless they had given their evidence, the boys would have been convicted un- dcr the Prohibition Act. The indict- ment was laid by the Crown on the information of Placid Gallant, who admits himself that he is in the liq. uor business. There were many dis- crepancies in the evidence of the Crown witnesses. The case for the defense was a complete alibi, each telling the truth. The demeanor of witnesses when on the stand should be considered. In the case of Placid Gallant there was no apparent reas- on except the pursuance of the ad. ministration of justice for him to bring this accusation. You can well imagine his reluctance to cometo court. He would prefer not to as he has laid himself open to a liability under the Prohibition Act and to per- jury. There is no question as to id- entity, as he had known the prisoners for some time. Other witnesses cor- roborated his evidence as to ident- lty. ‘The prisoners each tell their own story. The evidence of Daniel Gallant is not satisfactory. There is an element of improbitbiliiy in his case. There is a. mystery, however, which is in favor of the prisoners, as to how they knew that Placid Gal- lant would be coming in that evening with rum to Summerside. This has not been explained by Placid Gal- lant. That is the strong point in the, limlidPf-IIS, June 9. (UPJ-Riob- bers added insult to injury here when theyrobbcd the store of John Basone of 8100.
