pamphlet form for the benefit of the
public. They cover observatioiis' over
u period of years in which facts were
discovered about the oyster and its
growth that promise to have import-
nnt results on the development of the
lndustry in Canada and elsewhere.
The discovery that the hitherto un-
known stages of the oyster-larva can
he conveniently obtained by 3 plank-
ton-net carries with it the possibility
of R practical application of ineatim-
uhlc value in the culture cf oysters.
From the time of the early Roman
Empire it has been known that oys-
terspat can sometimes be obtained on
ropes, anchors, piles of wharves,
stones, shells or other natural or ar-
t.ifici.nl objects in the sea, and some
sort of culture method has long been
ln use in many countries. Constant
ednrts have been exerted to find a
practicable, safe and surc_ method of
catching, retaining and rearing thc
young spat. Through Mr. Stat1ord's
observations and experiments he is
able to state definately that ‘a man
instructed and qualified in the meth-
od of taking plankton, and in identif-
ying oystcrdnrva can tell almost to
n day when is the proper time to put
