Attention is invited to the following pro- elamation by Grand Sire Busbee :— 1819—1891. ANNIVERSARY PROCLAMATION. Sovereign Grand Lodge of the Independen: Order of Oddfeliows. To all to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting : Whereas, The due and proper celebration of the twenty-sixthday of April as the aani- versary of Oudfeliowship in America is sanctioned by immemorial custom, and ix in observance of the standing resolution of the Sovereign Grand Lodge, now, therefore, I, Charles M. Busbee, Grand Sire, by virtue of the zuthurity vested in me by jaw, do hereby recommend and enjoin upon all Grand aud Subordinate Bodies under the jurisdiction of the Order to dev: te the twenty-sixth day of April, A. D. 1891, (or, as the twenty-sixth day will fall on Sunday, the twenty-fifth or the twenty-seventh day of April, as may be selected) the seventy- second anniversary of the Independeut Order of Oddfellows in America, to suitable and appropriate exercises in commemoration of the day, and to public thanksgiving tu Almighty God for His manifold blessings vouchsafed to us, as »n Order and as indivi- duals, during the past year. Dune at the City of Raieigh, State of North Carolina, this the twenty-seventh day of February, Anno Domini, eighteen hund- red and ninety-one, and of the Order, the seventy-second year. (Signed) C. M. Busser, Granu Site. “The encampuent branch has entered Sweden—a di-pensation having been sent out for the first subordinate tu be instituted Malmo. The Encampments in British Columbia have petitioned for a charter for a Grand Eocampment, which will doubtless be granted. ‘That will make two grand bodies instituted in Canada since last session of the § G. L., the G. E, of Mamitoba having been in existence now for sume months. What are the Patriarchs of the Lower Provinces dving? They have had « sufficcent number «f subordinates in that jurisdiction for some years, but they have net managed to get up enough enthusiasm toak for a Grand Eucampmeut. Quebec! is ‘a smal! fieid for the Eacampment branch } aod has only three subordinates; but we) should not be surprised to see a Grand! Encxmpment there before our brethren in the Lower Provinces wake up, The Order in Indiana has lost by death a | truscd and wort y leader in the person {| P. G. M. John W. McQuid: y. For many ears his name has been identified with | Oddfellowship in this State. It well might! be, for his whole time is devuted to the, work, occupying a8 he did the positi n of Secretary t. a large Oddfeli-ws’ Relief Association in Indianapolis, and serving as official instructor for the State. In both these positions, as well as in the more hou- orary . ne he has filled, he did nuble work, and helped perhaps mere than auy other single man to advance the interests of the Order in Indiana, and made it the flourish- ing institution it is to-day. Nor in his own Staite alone was he conspicuous in our fra- ternity. Asa representative and an oflicer and subsequently as a contimuous visitor in the Sovereign Grand Lodge, he had become the familiar acquaintance and personal friend of many of the leading Oddfellows of every section of the continent. It is not in Indiana only that he will be missed and mourned, Regret for his loss wiil be felt wherever he was known, and a large meas- ure of sympathy will be extended to the friends of the departed brother and tu the Order of his State in their bereavement. The last Dominion O lifellow con*ains an ex- cellent article on tie Independence of Canada, from the pen of Dr. A, T. Campbell, Deputy Grand Sire. Sovrez oF Ovn SrrexetH. — Just here let me say that the strength of this grea. order rests in ite subordinate lodges; in the character of their individual m movers; in the steady, practical performance of the duties of the hour; in the constant and practical discharge of their obligations to each other. In these days of magnificence and displays, let us seek to keep well in view the foundation principles of this great order found in the lessons taught and the duties to be performed in the subordinate lodge. Let us look within a lodge of Oddfellows, get behind, so far as we can, the curtain that veils its proceedings. The lodge is cailed to order, the minutes read, and the first inquiry is, does any brother know of a sick brother or brother in d stress. If there beJa member of that lodge whom disease hus over-powered or upon whom the hand of misfortune is heavily laid, he is assured from that moment of the sympathy, the aid, the active pity of every member of the lodge. I do not go further into the busisess of the lodge I have struck the corner-etone of Oddfellowship, this duty of practical brotherhood. It has carried brightness into many a darkened home, and sent a thrill of joy into many a despairing soul. Ou, ye cynics, who sneer at these fraternal associations and ridicule the little ceremonials that attach themselves to their work; who walk on a plane of being above the rank and file, aud breathe a more exclusive atmosphere ! Oh, ye sceptics who doubt the truth of human brotherhood; who call friendship a sham and charity a delusion, who spesk of these beneyoleut orders with « shrug of the shoulder and dispute the good of their ex- istence! Come with me and visit one just one—ot these little households into which, through the agency of an Widitellows’ lodge, light has entered, and if you do not hang your head in very shame, then, indeed, shall I believe that there are some souls even in this day within whose fliaty walls the tra th can never enter.—-Chas, M. Probably few persons ever saw the breathing apparatus of 4 human being liil open for inspection. From « hospital cad- aver, we once saw the lungs and bronchial | tubes removed, and blown up as a_ boy; would a bladder or Loy balioon, until the! fiae bronchial tubes and air cels «f the lungs were distended to the fullest «x:ent. In this state the Jungs were hardened by immersion in alcohol, so that they remain- ed expanded when the air was let free. With a sharp knife the wind-pipe and lungs were split open, so that it was easy to trace the bronchial tubes gradually diminishing in size from the wind-pipe itse:f, becoming finer and more delicately branched, until smaller than tine sewing cotton, these tiny bronchi lead into the air-celis beyond, to convey air tu sustain life. Truly a wonderful sight, which we have often recalled during the past wiuter as we read of the great number of deaths from pneumonia and brenchitis. Nearly 200 deaths in Boston in the month of January. It seems impossible to most people that ss common and simple a disexse as bren-| chitis should cause death at all. But think fora momeut, what would happen if the lining membrane of those tiny tubes de- scribed above should become much swollen by inflammation, which is likely to occur after any severe cold. The passage of air to the lung cells wou!d be stopped, and the patient die from suff cation as certainly as if a giant grasped his throat People should not overlook the irritation or “tickling in the throat,” which causes a **hacking cough.” Sure symptoms of bron- chitis. The irritation being caused from inflammation inside of the wind-pipe, it is useless to take medicines into the stomach ts cure it; one might as well eat tallow to cure chapped hands. The interior mucous membrane of the wind-pipe must be premptly treated, to prevent the downward spread of the inflim- mation, and effectacure. Ona page twelve of a pamphiet published by I S.Johuson & Co., Boston, Mass., is printed plain direc- tions for applying Johnson’s Anodyne Lin- imeznt to the bronchial tubes and nasa! pas- siges, to cure cold and bronchitis. It is a well-known fact, as many persons | can testify that this old fashioned remedy wil] stop inflammation and swelling quicker chau any other medicine. all déi whi _- Nature requires aid in correcting irregula- ities at this season, and for both men and vomen no other remedy +qids De Wellisms’ Pink Piils as a spring bloo:l tonic.
