McConnell, Chief Acknian und a few firemen yesterday' morning a had fire would have occurred in ' the Central Methodist church. While the Central Methodist congregation were assembling for worship Chief Aekman and others were hard at work in the basement of the church extinguishing it emouldering fire discovered ln the nick of time by the sexton, Mr. Bingham. It appears that flames were first discovered by the sextion about nine o'clock and Rev. Mr. McConnell was notified. Mr. McConnell Paw thatallttle prompt action was all that was required and accordingly went at the fire with his garden hose. He soon extinguished all the fire in sight, but aboutten o‘clock he notified Chief Ackman by phone. When Chief Ackman arrived on the scene he and the sexton visited the basement and the chiefs keen scent for fire discovered asmoulderlng spark in the beams above the furnace and right under the pulpit and it was some time before it was again put out with the hose. The tire had started over the furnace and in order to get at it Chief Ackman had to crawl in on top of the furnace. Had the fire occurred in the night. or earlier in the morning the church would probably have been completely destroyed.-Monetcn Times. Waters, cologne and perfumes- toilet articles.
