One of the members had been in ii dyii state for some time: of course his chair, while he was absent, remained racciit. The club being met on their usual night, enquiries were naturally tuade alter their ~ associates. As he lived in the ntljoiiiing house, a particular friend went liiniself to enquire for him, and returned with the dismal tidings, that he could not possible survivaothe night. This threw a gloom on conversatioufroin the sad subject be- fore them were ineffectual. About midnignt, the time, by long pre- scription, uppropriated for the wulkmg of spectres, the door opened, and the form, in white, of the dying, or rather of the dead man, walked into the room, and took his seat on the accustomed chair; where he remained in silence, gazed at by the others. The a purition continued a sol‘- ficieat time in t e chair, to asstire all pre- sent of the reality of the vision: at n th he rose and stalked towards the door, which he opened as if living, went out and then shut the door alter him. Aller a long pause, some one at last had the resolution to say : It only one of us had seen this he would not have been believed, but it is impossible that so many persons can be deceived. The company by degrees recovered their speech, and the whole conversation, as may imagined, was u n, the dread- ful object whic had an aged their atten- tion. They broke up and went home. In the morning enquiry was made tiller their sick friend; it was answered by an account of his death, which happened nearly at the time of his appearing in the club. There could be little doubt before, but now nothing could be more certain than the reality of the apparition, which had been seen by so many persons to- gether. It is needless to say that such it story spread over the country, and found credit even from the infidels; for, in this case, all reason was superfluous when opposed to a plain fact asserted by three-and- twenty witnesses. To assert the doctrine of the fixed laws of nature was rediculous, when there are so many people of credit to prove that they might be unfixed. Years rolled on; the story ceased to engage attention, and it was forgotten, un- lesswhen occasionally produced to silence an unbeliever. One of the club was an apotheeary. In the course of his practice he was called to — woman whose profession was attend- ing sick persons. She told him that she could leave the world with a quiet con- scieifice but for one thing which lay on her Intu Letters to be regirlcrul, iind Niisvepupefl. Picaiiro Till Eaa.—A horrible death recently occurred in Paris from a common ties with many persons. A gentleman, eeling a sl' ht itching in his ear, took up a friction matngh in order to dispell it. In the ardent of a conversation he was sustaining he introduced the sulphrous end; the contact soon produced ignition, and the downy lining of the ear caught fire; a portion of the sulphur adhered to the flesh, and burnt there persistently. The unfortunate man never spoke ain. His sulferings were so agonizing that is tongue became powerless; and, alter two days’ torment and unavailing e of the surgeons, he died.
