FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1879, Correspondence. aa” We do not hold ourselves responsible for | the staements or opinions of our correspondents » To the Editor of the Examiner. Str,—Since I last wrote to you I have been over a large tract of Ontario, and have gained further information concerning cheese and butter factories. Cheese and butter factories are good paying institutions, so lam informed by those that are inter- ested in them. One machine-manufactur- ing firm informed me that they had orders in for the machinery of three new cheese factories, and that there is quite an excite- ment in different sections of the country for factories. It is quite evident that the far- mers of Ontario are fully alive to their in- terests, and want to utilize their pro- ducts to the very best advantage. Now, why is it that there is no such factory in Prince Edward Island? Can the farmers not see the adyantage that they have over the Ontario farmers. Cheese designed for the English market has first to be trucked over hundreds of miles of rail- road before it gets to the seaboard, while the farmers of Prince Edward Islnnd have the advantage of having vessels sailing for England from their very doors. There should be not less than seven or eight fac- tories established at different points in the Island at once. It requires but little capital to start one, and the market is sure, and factories of this kind will encourage more stock raising. One feature { observed in my travels. The soil of Ontario is prin- cipally black muck, occasionally intermixed with a brown sandy clay. I further obser- ved that the lands appeared to have what seemed to me to be a white scum all over it; and, upon enquiring, I found this white scum was gypsum or land plaster. Farmers here are very partial to it, and say that they would not farm now witheut it. They use, upon an _ average, from one to two thousand pounds to the acre. The quantity depends upon the nature of the crop. Gypsum can be bought in Charlottetown at eight dollars per ton, fresh from the works, and probably for less when taken in bulk, and yet the Messrs. Hyndman Bros. have failed to induce the farmers to try it after they have gone to a large expense in building a mill for its manufacture, and they have now on hand some two thousand tons ready for use. I cannot say anything further about starch factories, as | have not had an op- portunity of gaining any further iaforma- tion. The State cf Maine and New Bruns- wick are where starch is principally made from potatoes. Senator Howlan is again on his feet and has been steadily improving ever since he had the operation performed of taking the left eye out. He is now visiting a friend at Kingston, and that friend is not a man; but there is good pros- pects of that friend becoming a a resident of the Island. Time, and I think a very short time, at that, will tell the tale. He certainly must feel a deep sense of gra- titude to his nurse, sister St. George, for her devoted attention to him all during his long illness. I must say that she isa noble specimen of a womani. Yours truly, A_B._-ALMovR. Ottawa, April 28, 1879. weil ne To the Editor of the Examiner : Sir,—In the Examiner of the 28th inst. I see a correspondent over the signature of ‘‘Mechanic” showing the foolishness of re- taining Grit officials in office ; and also the injustice of Liberal-Conservatives using their influence in behalf of Grit officials. It is evident ‘‘Mechanic” takes the right view of the matter, and the Government will do well to see that they are not in- fluenced by men who have not the interest of the party at heart and who do not show rauch wisdom in their anxiety to befriend political opponents. If Messrs. Yates and Hobbs had to-‘‘get up and get ’ on account of their political leaning, why retain the Keeper of the Colonial Building? It can- not be for any other reason than that he is a square Grit. But, perhaps, Sir, the Liberal-Conservatives who are thus in- fluenced in his behalf thinks they can bring about a political conyerson. If so, they will find they are considerably mistaken in the character of the one with whom they are deai.ng. Let the Government, as ‘‘Mechanic’ says, ‘‘extend the principle a little further,” and their‘action will be ap- proved of by an overwhelming majority of their supporters. It is nothing but right, Sir, that the men who worked hard in the interest of the Liberal-Conservative party, and who have done ail they could to bring about a grand victory, should receive at the hands of a Liberal-Conservative Adminis- tration whatever patronage may be at their disposal. Feeling, Sir, that the Govern- ment will act wisely in this matter. I renain, etc., ANOTHER Megcuanic. Charlottetuwn, Aprill 20, 1879. = == Woman’s Ruszers only 35 cents at Dorsey & Jost’s. Tribute to the Memory of the late Honorable Francis Kelly. | COMMUNICATED. | | Iv is with feelings of extreme regret that _we to-day announce the death of. Hen. Francis Kelly, who died at his residence, Fort Augustus, April 19th, 1879. Hon, Diecis Kelly was born at Mul- lologhan, County Monaghan, Ireland, in the year 1803, of industrious and respectable parents. He received a liberal and careful education, and, at an early age, imbibed the principles of industry and virtue. Having completed his studies in one of the high scheols of Dublin, he afterwards successfully filled the positions of school teacher and Law-Clerk in the land of his faith. But being a gentleman of liberal views and lofty thought, and seeing the in- justice and cruelty with which they and his fellow-countrymen were treated, he resol- ved to seek a more congenial home in the fair-famed and distant America. He, with a number of his countrymen, landed in Charlottetown, May 1835, and settled at Fort Augustus. : Mr. Kelly’s gentlemanly bearing an commendable deportment. were soon ob- served by the late Rev. John Macdonald, proprietor of the Lot on which Mr. Kelly resided. That gentlemen appointed him his Attorney, and employed !*m to survey his estate and transact all the business con- nected therewith, which he did with credit to himself and satisfaction to his employer. His ability and obliging disposition ~en- deared him to his neighbors and the gen- eral public, and he was __ elected in 1858 to represent the Third Electoral District of Queen’s County in the House of Assembly, which position he had very ably filled up to the time of his death. During that long period of political life, Mr. Kelly never lost an elec- tion, which is a sufficient evidence that his acts were satisfactory and his value appre- ciated.; and the wharfs, bridges and many public works, which were erected through Mr. Kelly’s instrumentality, are standing memorials of the services he rendered his country. He was successively the people’s representative, a member of the Executive Council, Surveyor General, member of the Board of Works, member of the Board of Education, Commissioner of Crown Lands, and one of the Governors of Prince of Wales College, etc. , etc. Previous to the late General Electien, Mr. Kelly resolved to retire from political life. But his friends rallied around him, and he was induced to put himself in nomi- nation. Such was the esteem im which the people held him that they elected him at the head of the poll, although he was stretched on his sick bed and unable to at- tend political meetings. But Mr. Kelly’s, like all earthly triumphs, was of shoré dura- tion. After receiving the best medical aid possible, and being fortified by all the rights of the Holy Catholic ‘Church, he peacefully fell asleep in the Lord, in the 76th year of his age. On Monday morning, the 2ist ult, a large and respectable concourse of relatives and acquaintances assembled at the family residence, to pay a last tribute of affection to him whom they so much loved. At nine o'ciock the remains were conveyed to thie parish church, where a solemn requiem mass was celebrated by the Rey. Allan J. McDonald, P. P., assisted ~ by ‘the Rev. M. J. McMillan, Cardigan, “atta the Rev. Charles McDonald, Georgetown, after which, the Rev. Allan McDonald, Pastor, delivered a very suitable, eloquent and touching panegyric on the memory of Hon. Mr. Kelly. The cortege again formed and repaired to the churchyard. After the appropriate prayers were recited, the body of the de- ceased—enclosed in a beautiful coflin—was lain in a grave amidst the sighs and tears of alarge congregation of relatives and friends, come together to pay the last sad tribute.of devotion tothe memory.of the faithful servant of God.—May his soul rest in peace.
