Bridges. - THE GIPBY'S SECRET. ` but the race between the ladies inter- rupted her race for a. husband. The Kensington Dramatic Club presented their spectacular drama, “Thy Gipsy's Secret" or “Because I Love You," in the C. M. B. A. Hall, Kensington, on Tuesday, April 22nd, to a numerous, intelligent and appre- ciative sudience. From the time the curtain rose on the ilrst scene until it fell on the last, the audience were held thoroughly interested, and, at times, irresistibly spell-bound. The result was such as to make the dra- matic club feel justly proud. The cast of characters was: Imogene Courtlelgh--Wilful, way- wnrd_ and wealthy-Miss Janie Mc- Donald. The “George Washington"- A country tavern in Old Virginia-An impromptu wedding. Act II. “Lovers Leap"-A blue Mountain precipice-a daring rescue. Act III. The Courtlelgh place- plantation mansion--a woman’s fol- ly. Act IV_"1‘he mountain studio-A puinter's Paradise-an affair of hon- or. The scene of the play is laid in Old Virginia, and depicts pastoral scenery in vivid reality. The plot as it unfolds shows the carefully pre- pared mechanations of Irs. Court- leigh, the clever, designing villain, and the equally clever thwartings of Horace Verner, the shrewd and delib- erate hero. Imogene Courtleigh, the heroine, impersonates the character of the well-bred, well-educated and correctly-determined lady. Buck Tyson originally interpreted the character of the humorous and complacent gipsy tinker. He always rose to the occasion, and his native wit supported him eminently. Nance Tyson edectively and good- naturedly interpreted the necessary character of a prudent, yet almost indulgent mother and the exceptional- ly conservative woman. On her hold- ing- the secret depended the deuoue- ment of the lot This secret when p . .disclosed showed how Horace Verner was the son of George Courtleigh. uncle of Ira Courtlelgh, and how Ginger was Hornce's sister. Ginger was, in appearance and in- terpretation, the personitlcation of the gipsy waif. Dink Potts, the early companion of Horace Verner, excellently portrayed the character ol’ the ardent and per- sistent lover and showed powers yet to be developed. Squire Ripley, the proprietor of the "George Washington" country tavern was the actual embodiment of the practical and magnetic landlord. Elmer Van Sittert gushingly enun- ciated the character of the pompous and sclf-satisfied Anglomaniac New Yorker; but his professed notion of chlvalrlc adventure was effectively dissipated by his cowardics in at- tempting to prgyent the vindication of honor. ,_ ,_ _ Major Duffy, representing the Con- federate veteran, and the winning candidate for civic honors, displayed the character of the hero confident in his own achievements, and the politi- cian satisned"'ivll:h his own iltneaie tof serve the public. ` Prudence,_Freeheart with due femln-, lne modesty, iyet resolutely firm de- termination, carefully ‘ re ered her Lest in position, but highest in color, comes Lige, correctly known all Elijah, the colored servant. He show- ed that he has the right conception of the effusive darksy and he proved himself capable of impressively show- ing how the character of the darkey can be correctly and spectacularly im- personsted. Between the first and second sets Mr. John Thomson gave a. reading which was heartily applauded. Be- tween the second and third, Miss El- la McMahon delivered a declamation which was much praised, and justly so. Between the third and fourth Mr. Henry Bridges favored the audi- ence \vith one of his splendid songs. \ The general effect was such as toi show how each actor possessed pow- ers peculiarly adapted to their re- spective pnrt_ The *\i"!ily complimen- tary remnrli' of ` ~ .tndlencs are a sufficient proof of the success that nt- tenrled the presentation, and the good order maintained throughout shows how intensely interested were all present. The Dramatic Club extend their hearty thanks to all who showed ap- preciation of their efforts. A FEATURE WHICH APPEALS. A feature of the Mount Allison campaign which appeals very strong- ly to subscribers, is the mctlzod of rmyment. In St. John mid-other dis- tricts',' where the campaign has al- ready begun, this feature has been commented upon very favorably. Dr. Borden and Mr. Cassidy express great satisfaction with the 'manner in which the movement has so lar pro- gressed, and they feel that, nlthoiigh St. John has done remarlralily well, even greater success will attend the efforts of the workers in other dis- tricts. In Moncton, the leaders of the movement, have their committees well organized and anticipate in rea- ching the goal set. ‘ $|00 REWARD. $100 The readers of this pnnorwlll be ulasled tip learn that th_ere is at least one dreaded isease that science has been able tn cur;e ln all its stage-s and thatls Cats! rh.Hall s Catan-h Cure is the only positive, cure now known to the igiedlloal fraternity.
