He was, the ouly shipping merchani io America who obtained the honor of Kuighthood. This honor was conterred upon him by the Royal hands of the (Jueen herself, in the year 1872. Just sixty-two years be- fore the event, Sir Huyvh was born at Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland. His father was a shipmaster apd trader, and he was the second One of the vessels of which his father was cap- ul d ou to-day, steamship we believe. of live sons. tain was called the ** Favorite, that vessel Sir Hugh came to Montreal, sailing from Greenock on the 12th of} April, 1826. He obtained employment | of William Kerr & Co., of whom he ob- tained a knowledge of the shipping busi- ness. Then he travelled in the United States, spent a year iu his native couu- try, and returned to Montreal in 1831, | to make that city bis home ané the seat of his business operations. For the next) four years he was in the employment of | Messrs. J. Miller & Co., ship-builders aud shippers, where he found scope for the disptay of his acquired knowledge, and gave such satisfaction to the firm that, at the end of the period, he became a member of it. After the death of Mr. Miller, in 1838, he was taken into the firm, the name of which was then changed to Edmonstone & Allan, and in 1852 became that of the well-known | partoership of H. & A, Allan. About thirty years ago, the firm con-| ceived the idea of enlarging the facilities | of transportation between Canada and Great Britain, and to the fifteen sailing, ships they then had afloat, they added) two iron screw steamships to trade} between Liverpool, Quebec and Montreal. | A little later they added two others; and} in 1857 they made arrangements to carry, | fortuightly, the mails betweea Liverpool | aod Quebec in the summer, aud between | Liverpool aud Portland, Me.. in the win- | one of the finest | ter The Line is now afloat. Allan were the first to adopt the sparor flush deck on their steamers; and, though they were opposed in this by the British Board of Trade, they have had the satisfaction of seeing their example followed by every other great Steamship Company. In 1844, Sir Hugh Allan was married to a duughter of the late Mr. John Smith, of Montreal; and was great as a parent a3 well asa ship-owner, for he was the father of twelve children. Educational Association, Dr. Leeming cited from ‘** Gulliver’s Travels” a passage which shows strikingly the pre- science of the extraordinary man who wrote that wonderful satire on mankind. In the course of his description of the inhabitants of Laputa, Dean Swift says: ** ‘they spend the greatest part.of their lives in observing the celestial bodies, which they do by the assistance of glasses, far excelling ours in goodness. For although their largest telescopes do not exceed three feet, they magnify much more than those of a hundred with us, and shows the stars with greater clearness. This advantage hath enabled them to extend their dis- coveries much farther than our astrono- mers in Europe; for they have made a catalogue of ten thousand fixed stars, whereas the largest of ours do not contain above one-third partof that number. They have like discovered two lesser stars, or satellites, which revolve about Mars, where- of the inermost is distant from the centre of the primary planet exactly three of his diameters, and the outermost five; the former revolves in the space of ten hours, and the latter in twenty-one and a half ; so that the squares of their periodical times are very near in the same proportion with the cubes of their distance frou the centre of Mars, which evidently shows them to be governed by the same law of gravitation that influences the other heavenly bodies. They have observed ninety-three different comets, and settled their periods with great exactness If this be true (and they affirm it with great confidence) it is much to be wished that their observations were made public, whereby the theory of comets, which at present is very lame and dk fective, might be brought to the same perfection with other parts of astronomy.” These statements are in aceord with the latest discoveries of astronomical science.
