The following certificates tire ii suflicierit gun. rantce ofthe entire safety and efliciency of the Safe. ty Lamp and Feeder. “Fe have had an opportunity to test the Patna; Safety Lamp and Lamp Feeder of Mr. John Newell, of this city, in regard to the measure of protection ilieir construction atfords. In the trials to which we subjected them, we endeavored, without efl'ect, to produce cxplosioiist of the vapor of the fluid mind ‘with air, and to burst tlicni hy the pressure oftlre vapor alone. The principle adopted by Mr. Nowell is that of the well knoivn Davy Ltiinp. He has go 1 combined the parts, that we :ire satisfied that all risk of explosive action is remove . (Ill.-\lll.ES 'l‘. JACKSON, M. l) , AUG. A. HAYES, l\l' l)., Assayers totlio State of Massachusetts. Borrow, Aug 30, 1852. Mr. John Newell, of Boston, has exhibited to mg a Lrtntp, and also containing vessels, furnished with wire gauze protectors, upon the principle of Davy’o Safety Lamp for miners He has used both these instruments before me with inflaniniable fluids, and in both, when set on fire, the flame was arrested by the wire gauze, which is coated with silver. If the instruments are faithfully constructed, and carefully attended to, so that the wire gauze does not suffer in- jury from corrosion, wear or violence, I am ofopini- on that the protection will prove efl'ectual against ex- plosion. Nothiug short of this conviction would in- duce ino to countenance the continued use of the burning fluids, so called, asl have thought they ought to be entirely discarded, if not prohibited from use; so frequent and dreadful are the accidents occa- sioned by ignorance and carelessness. In ever case, glass lamps should be given up; and those 0 metal substituted, on account of the danger of fracture. B. Sl LLMAN, senior. New HAVEN, Oct. 16.1853. I have examined Newell’s Patent Safety Lamp and Lamp Feeder. They are constructed upon strictly philosophical principles, having ti tube of sil- vcrcrl wire gauze. with it small perforation in His cap. If well made, they cannot fail to insure pro- tection against those dangerous explosions to which the vapors of burning fluids and ciimphene are sub- ject, when rnixed with air. Their general introduc- tion, I have no doubt. would prevent maiiy distress- ing and fatal accidents. E. S. CARR, M.
