KEEP THE HEAD UP. , ____ Holding the head erect is much more important than many realize. Watch tho women who go about the street, or in any gathering, and note the difference in appearance, between those who carry themselves well and those who do. not. You will notice that the former stand or walk with the chin bold up, not drooping to- wards the chest. Some girls have the idea of hold- ing the head up, all right., but go about it in the wrong way. Thcy thrust ollt the chin, po* the head forward, raise the shoulders, and suc- ceed in ionizing _stiff and awkward. This is one of the-occasions when a 'full length mirror is' u great belp. Stand in front of it, and practice till you get the right attitude. ‘The level gaze,' that novelists attribute to their intelligent and high-minded heroines, is the right one to copy, as n guide to holding the head in the right poise. A cold bath at night, followed by it brisk rub with toilet water con- taining alcohol, will sometlmes cure a red nose. Facial massage and in- halations of salt water are also ben- eficial. In reoent.seasons there has been an effort among manufacturers of wo- men's clothing to provide ready made what women usually call simple little street frocks. 'Ilhese arenot of the elaborate type, but merely frocks of simple lines and of moderate cost. such as a woman likes to have 'for ordinary street wear or for small in- formal social affairs. - It must he admitted that as a rule the ready-made (rocks of this class leave something to be desired. The designers, instead of clinging to sim- plicity of line and detail and trusting to the color and texture to be ob- tained even in many inexpensive ina- terials for the success of the frock, attempt shoddy imitations of elabo- rate models and by dint of using quantities of showy trimmings rob their offerings of any charm they might have. This, however, is not always the case. Occasionally one finds a. really attractive model, not extravagantly high in price, but on the whole, one will obtain better results for less money if one,can have frocks of this character made by a fairly skilled dressmsker whose prices are reason- able. There is always that ‘if.' At this season of the year a frock of this type is a goodlinvestmen, for .ons's winter things are beginning to show wear and tear, although there are still over two months and a half of winter weather, when such a cos- tume ss this may be worn- with com- fort. The shops are full of bargains now in materials suitable for these frocks. The usual choice of the manufactur- ers is the light weight French gorge or cloth or satin finished woolens, and similar studs that will make use- ful aud attractive street froekg of this type. The usual trimmings are soutache braiding, velvet or satin As for the girl who wears low shoes in winter, a red nose is merely the natural consequence of her folly. She should not take long to choose between footwear that protects her ankles from cold and damp, and a continuation of the disflgurlng color. bands and wide bands of silk braid. A good model for one of these 'lit- tle' frocks is of dna French navy blue serge, trimmed with bands of black satin. .A new touch is given to the blouse by a large sailor collar of satin opening over a chemisette of tucked chidon, and there are under- sleeves also of chiffon. The embroidered band trimmings, which one can sometimes find going at half price in this month of sales, can be utilised with excellent effect on a simple frock, provided one is careful to put the right tints togeth- er. A frock of sage green cashmere, perfectly plain and simple, with a shallow yoke and deep undercuds of dotted net is given a note of regl distinction by embroidered trimming bands in shades of green just touch- ed with old rose and gold, applied around the yoke outline, on the cuds ill” iilllv Ai. l;il\lia CANADA T0 BRISTOL Less than six days ai ses.
