The Memorial of the undersigned re-
spectfully sheweth:
That they come before you on behalf of
The Committee which was appointed to
provide for the erection of a Monument,
commemorative of the action of those who
lately in South Af rica. so nobly ventured f
and in some instances, gave their lives in
behalf ot their Country`s cause.
In all times and in all lands it has been
deemed a sacred duty to rec ognize noble
deeds and to ensure that the remembrance
of them shall be preserved as an incentive
for emulation on the part of succeeding
generations. No people filling to realize
this need can hope to prosper, for it is
only in proportion as men`s souls are dom-
inated by high ideals that they can attain
to aught that is great or glorious. Sad,
indeed, is it when men are so sunk in sor-
did commercialism that their hearts are
not responsive to this noble instinct of
humanity.
Even now we can appreciate somewhat
of the historic importance of our action in
sending our sons to assist on the battle-
Beld,the solidarity of the Empire.-Still
more readily should we realize the debt ot
gratitude we owe those of our men who
served in the South African Campaign.
We gave our honor to their keeping and
they not only retained it uneullied, but
have caused it to shine with new lustre.
It is only necessary to imagine what
would have been our feelings had they
tarnished our laurels to appreciate the
measure of our obligation. Surely then it
isdtting that as a _Province we shall erect
some lasting memorial that will attest to
our recognition, both oi the importance ot
the incident and the conduct of our
troops. ' 1
The edncative innnence that such re-
cords possess is not easily overestimated.
Think you that the statues and columns
which stand in the publie places ol Eng-
land, the monuments which grace that
great National Mausoleum, Westminster
Abbey, have not had an inlluence upon
the souls of Englishmen, not measurable
in pounds, shillings and pence? This is a
new country, but we are beginning to
realize that we are participating in the
birth of a nation, and should seek a deeper
_ appreciation of all that tends to develope
national character.
Im pressed by such ideas a number of
our citizens have subscribed $2103 towards
the e.ection ot a monument to; be placed
in front of the P1-ovinc»alBuild1ng. From
such information as we have been able to
secure and from a careful examination of
the plans submitted to us,we have reached
the conclusion that it would not be possible
to erect a suitable one-one that would
_ not be an eye-sore, for a less sum than
