Paul 4N'1' Pa: ll; Peas GA Baas Page Pass North was on questionable ground in giving a direct raise to south'; two-club opening. Admittedly, the club queen was a good card. and so was 'the king of spades, but the "flat' pattern of North's holding depreciated these hssels. The wise: course was first to bid two no- trump and see what action south chose to take from there. It is true that the final contract. to which North's immediate raise contribut- ed so strangely, could have been made. but that was -because the outstanding cards lay wedl for South. West, shrewdly deciding to hold on to his ace. opened the eart queen. South won and "bud ed". Obviously, he could discard his los- ing heart on dummy's fourth dia- mond. but the vital question was: Could he safely unblock the dis- mond suit before using the club queen as a final entry? The alter- native plan was to draw trumps, cash the A-K-Q of diamonds in safety, and hope that the spade ace was on-side. so that the king could be used for entry to dummy. South made the wrong deciscn. He laid down two top clubs from his own hand. then tried to uu- bioclr the diamond suit. West, of course. ruffed the third diamond and laid down the shade ace. Mathematical probabilities strong- ly favored the other plan of play. The odds were two-to-one against a 3-3 break of six missing cards (as in diamonds): whereas there is n. lly Thornton VI. Iurgeu) though there isn't a drop of ,fish blood in them, was proving himself now. Yes. sir. he was 80. and those who saw it never will forget the sight. Graywing the Gull and a lot of his friends saw it. so did Barker the seal. It was one of the most ex- citing events any of them ever had seen. so exciting that some of those Gulls almost lost their voices from screaming. Excitement and scream- ing seem to go together. I wonder why? They all thought that Pilot was crazy. Even Graywing. who had known Pilot for a long. long time. was inclined to think so. You see everybody thought Pilot had led his followers into a trap. Even his foi- lowers who had trusted him blind- ly, following without question where he led, thought so. And because they thcught so they were more frightened than ever. They were the crazy ones, crazy with fright. The Terrible one, the Killer Whale. most feared of all who swim the ccean, had appeared. Pilot had at once led the way into a lonely har r, the Terrible One following. For a time it looked as if Pilot was so frightened that he didn't know what he was about or what he was doing. for he was headed straight for the shore. and no Whale can live on land. But things are not always As they seem. Pilot knew exactly what he was doing. where he was going. There was a. long island separated from the mainland by a fairly deep winding channel. Into this chan- nei Pilot turned. He had been in there once before a long time ago when he was smaller than he was now. The water had been deep enough for him then. Was it deep enough now that he was so much bigger? And when he had been there before the tide had been higher. Of course that meant more water. Now it was not only lower but was still going out, getting still lower. They couldn't wait for the tide to turn for the Terrible one was already in the harbor. There could be no turning back. . so Pilot did not hesitate. He I congratulations 90 Shama's Self-Service Groceteria on their splendid modernization program which will mean better service to the public. SIDNEY T. GREEN & 00. In the middle the water was deep enough. but only in the middle. it was deep enough for him and of course for all his followers for none was bigger than he. But it wasn't deep enough for the Terrible One. He was sure of this. And be- cause that channel was more or less winding he could make haste but slowly. There could be no headlong rushing as there had been in the open sea and the deeper water of the harbor. So Pilot wisely slowed down. He swam as last as he could and be sure of keeping in the channel and not going aground. but no faster. To get stranded would be as bad as being caught 'by' the Terrible One. so Pilot hurried carefully which is. of course. the only way to hurry. Not so some of those behind him. South reasoned that t s chance was reduced by the fact hat West. holding the spade see, would be tempted to lead that card and that his failure to do so more or less marked the ace off-side. but this was not a valid conclusion. .n...,.g congratulations . , 10 i Shama's" Self-Service (trneeieria P P" "N 'l.?'?'??'.'l'l".9.
