Starting from the lowest level since early April. the market re- ' gained a little more than one-third _ o! the sharp loss encountered yes-f terday. ‘ Rails. closely followed by oils, stepped into higher ground short- ly after the opening gong, and their combined action brought plus signs to most of the list. Utilities were an exception. They moved narrowly most of the day and ended with small fractional gains and losses. The volume of trading at 910,000 shares was disappointing to those looking for the conventional signs of underlying market strength. It was about average for a‘ rally of today's dimensions. Yesterday's sell-off was accompanied by 1,210.- 00o transactions. The Associated Press average of 80 stocks advanced .6 of a point to 56.5. To salvage stiff old brushes, soaking overnight, preferably in inary. Gasoline is also effective. After the old paint. has been soft- ened, it should be scraped off with a blunt knife or combed out with a steel comb o1’ brush. If the first soaking fails to remove the paint, the process can be repeated Shellac brushes should be cleaned with alcohol, and whitewash and calci. mine brushes with water. All“ mOst of the accumulation has been removed, the brush should be scrubbed in warm water with a mild laundry soap-never with a strong soap. The excess water should be shaken out and the brush left to dry. The bristles should be straightened out with a scrub brush or comb before com- pletcly dry, after which the brush should be wrapped -- not too tightly-in heavy paper or card- board to keep the bristles straight. If the brush is dipped in paint be- fore being fully dried, the mois- ture will make the brush soft end listless. Whel-l a brush is being used every day, it should be filled with pain-i: and wrapped overnight in several thicknesses o4’ paper, or suspended 1n a can of water. 1f used inver- rnittently, it may be suspended in raw linseed dil or kerosene. If stored in turpentine, the brush is likely to become hard, It should never be allowed to real; on the ends o1 the bristles (or any length oll time, because it will become warped and the flow of paint will be uneven. with a hole at the end of the handle, a brush may be Suspended in the paint from a rod or stick across the edges of tholcan so that the bristles do not touch the bottom.
