Lou training is the cure which some people advoc- ate. More young men and women will come into the profession if the door is opened a little wider. they say. and as for as it goes. this ll probably true. If they did not have to go to college at all, and were given teaching licensee when they graduate from the viluige school. there is little doubt that the tee- cher-supply problem would be solv- ed. That is. the quantity problem would be solved. The quality pro blem would be in a more hopeless mess than ever. . . . As long as the teaching profou- ion in Prince Edward Island re- mains the ugly duckling it now is. this will be the problem of the legislators. How much do we dare lower the quality in order that the quantity may be adequate to flu our Island schools? It seems pret- ty well-established that if you at- tempt to raise the quality by re- quiring more teacher training. the quantity will dwindle to the point where Island schools will be vacant. Indeed. if the amount of training now required remains static, there is grave danger of an acuts short- age of teachers resulting. . . . Make teaching conditions more pleasant, someone advises. and various other side-show attractions are suggested to help make teach- ers more satisfied with their lot. We don't believe any of these things are taken into consideration by the young man or woman who con- templates teaching as a career. or even as a stepping stone to other careers, or as a stop-gap employ- ment in the interval before marri- age. Is there a "future" in it? The, career candidate asks himself. is there even a "present" in it, the stepplng-stonc and stop-gap boys BUMMERSXDI llas Successful Your -Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Ii. Cl.
