Woodley, of Quebec, the most extensive boot and shoe manufa:- taxes in this Province, have suspended : liabilities about $300,000; the assets will pay 50 cents on the dollar. This is the fourth large failure in the same trade in this province within ten days. Others are expected to follow, as the trade is badly de- moralized. THe Newrounptano Herrine Fisnery. —The American schooner ‘‘ Montesuma,” Maxner, master, which arrived here yester- day sfternoon from Fortune Bay, Niid., bound to Beverley, Mass., reports herring very scarce. When the “ M.” left on the 16th ult., there were fourteen Americar vessels in pert, waiting cargo. The schoon- ers ‘‘ Standard” and ‘** Kohinoor,” of Lu- nenburg, and ‘* Pioneer,” of Chester, were also in port, each of the three latter having secured about 160 bbls. -Hx. Herald. ReMaKABLE Scicipe.—Elward Vilas, a teller in Averell, Chapman & Bean's bank, in Ogdensburg, N. Y., committed suicide by deliberately shooting himself in the headwith a revolver, at 10 o'clock, in the bar-room of the St. Lawrence Hall, Mofitreal, on the night of the Ist. At the time he committed the rash act, he might have taken some liquor, but was not, anpa- rently, under ite intluence. He was speake ing to the bar-keeper when he placed th- pistol to his head. His last words were: ‘My poor wife.” He leaves a wife and two children, He was 25 years of age. He died instantly. Burns anp THe Haccrts Duty Honorep. —Robert Burns's Anniversary was cele- brated quite grandly in Montreal on Friday evening last. The never-to-be-forgotten Haggis was accorded a conspicious place and claimed special attention from one of Burns's warmest admirers. One report of the festival states that so soon as all were seated at the festive board, the pipers pro- ceeded round the room to the door, struck up the familiar strain ‘‘ Wha Wadna’ Fight fer Charlie,” and escorted four waiters up and round the room, each holding aloft + smoking dish of Haggis, which they de- posited ina place of honor on each of the four lengthy tables. After this, Mr. Allan Miller, Past 1st Vice-President of the Society, recited ‘‘To A Haggis” as the favorite dish was being served, which of course helped to give a relish to the savory morsel.
