The deceased had lived in India for the past twenty years and had attained a high place in the Indian civil service. During his residence there he had visited his native province several times, the Inst occasion being in June 1002. Mn-I. Dawson and family have lived here for the past ten years. In March, 1003 Mr. Dawson|started for South Africa. where he was about to assume a prominent position from the British Government but at C ipe Traverse wben_ about to cross at the Capes he was taken ill and since that time has never fully recovered. In Sept 1903 hc wevcr,ho was sudloiently lraprovel to return to India in order tc complete his term in the civil service of about a year which would entitle him to a handsome pension from the Government. Lael. March a cable was received that he was about to leave for England to undergo treatment from a specialist for falling eyesight; and Mrs. Dawson left at once to meet him in London whore he was expected to arrive on March 20th. Since that time she has been at his bedside till he passed away yesterday afternoon. ’l.he deceased gentleman was in his 46th year and srcond son of the late W. E. Dawson of Charlottetown. Mrs. Dawson is a native of Scotland. There are also three children, the eldest boy attending the Kingston Military School and the others, a boy and a girl living here. Mr. Dawson as a civil servant pro- formed many important duties and was connected with many of the large public works in India, particularly in connection with the irrigation of the country. In 1808 he was commissioned to visit many of the large public works of Canada and United States and his report on that occasion is voluminous and comprehen- sive. His observations on that occasion included the methods of mac- agement of the river boats, the diking et.c.,of the Mississippi river and in his introduction to his report he says: “These notes are compiled by the writer when on special duty on the Mississippi river under the orders of the Bombay Government, the object of this deputation heingto study the practice of the Mississippi engineers with a view to recommend the adoption of such of their methods of scientific research and engin- eering principlfs as might be suitable tc the Indus river." ________.i-M-_ Wall: up. step up, jump up, climb up to St. _lames Hall this evening.
