I ll SERIIOUS BLOW _ _YA_us`t_ijla_n_ Government Cautiousiy Breaking the '_ News to the:-_Starving and Mutinous People, but -the Prestige ot’ the Army is Shaken and its Morale Undermined. Germans Sending Troops to Assist and to Ilearten the Austrians -_-li-M. PARIS, .Inns 25.--Vienna tries to break the news to a starving and' mu- .tinous people.. .lt is announced that “a position has arisen, by reason of' _the height of the water and had wea- ther, which has caused us to evacuate Montello and some sectors of the oth- er positions which we had won on the right bank of the Piave." lt is asserted that the order for ev- acuation was given on Friday. and that'it was carried out so skilfully that the Austrian movements remain- ed wholly unobserved by the enemy. The italian artillery was directed on Sunday against many lines already evacuated and Italian infantry ad- vanced to itttack abandoned trenches. The undeniable truth is that the Austrian army has sustained a grave defeat and suffered a serious loss of prestige. German troops are already on the move to strengthen the Aus- trians in the Alpine region and re- store. their morale. It is possible that the enemy offensive in the mountains may bs renewed almost immediately as a diversion to prevent the Italians from pushing forward across the Piave and completing the route of the Austrian army,on the Venetian » plain. The Austrians, it is believed, have still 'a powerful reserve, estim- ated at twenty divisions, in the reglou_ between the Piave and the lsonzo. It is scarcely likely that General .Foch will authorlm an italian advance in force on the Venetian plain until the menace of a fresh Austro-German at- tack on the Alpine front 'is removed. THE AVIATORS DID IT _ The victory on the Piave is n. great triumph for the fighting aviator. The services of the bombers who, cruis- ing~a.bove the Piave, destroyed the majority of bridges and when the floods coming to their aid had com- pleted that vital work, showering high explosives upon the Austrians as they crowded around the few remainingl pontoon crossings, were of the utmost values. The artillery ilre of the Ital- ians was good, but there seems to be, no doubt that the Allied aviators were in a greater degree than the gunners responsible for the victory. The bombing' of the river crossings is like- ly to be carried out hereafter on a great scale wherever the enemy in an advance is under the necessity of de- pending for his supplies upon tempor-, ary pontoon structures easily des- troyed by aerial attack._ Apart from the destruction of means of communication there is no reason to _doubt that no lnconsiderable por- tion of what, the Italian commander- in-chief speaks oi' as the appalling cn- emy losses was the result of the bombs _showered upon them iroin the air. Certain enemy di~ visions lost two thirds of their effec- tives. ~ A despatch to the Matin from Turin, says that the rout' of the Austrians is complete and that the Piave has carried away many Austrians, dead.
