SPORTS A message from the Sports Editor ne of the criticisms directed at the X- O Press last year was its lack of stories and photographs concerning UPEI athletics. This year we will try to correct that problem by having regular sports stories which will attempt to keep students informed on the sports scene hereat UPEI. Athletics area big part of campus life and in the past this school has had some very competitive teams which are consistently among the best in Atlantic Canada. Last year, for example, our women’s basketball team finished first in Atlantic Canada and competed in the CIAU National Tournament with some of the best women’s basketball teams in the country. For those not familiar with UPEI athletics, we have teams which compete against other universities throughout Atlantic Canada in sports such as basketball, hockey, soccer, field hockey and volleyball. In addition, intramural leagues are formed in various sports such as softball, hockey and tennis. This year, the X-Press will try to keep people informed about all these activities with articles on games results and upcoming events. While the main focus will be on UPEI athlet- ics, articles on other off-campus events will also appear, from local sports such as the Island’s first pro hockey team, the P.E.|. Senators, to the Toronto Blue Jays or the National Hockey League. Submissions on any sport, whether it’s on- campus, amateur or professional are strongly encouraged. Articles can cover anything, froma report on a recently played local game to an announcement about an upcoming event or a commentary on the Blue Jays’ chances of win- ning the World Series; or, as an alternative to writing an article, you can drop off a suggestion about something you would like to see done. Whatever your choice, we just want submis- sions to help provide the best sports coverage possible. Todd Petrie, Sports Editor 1993 Rubgy Schedules Regular Season — |.
