If they are not, and I don’t believe they are, he will be delighted to have them cleared up, end we shall be happy again,”’ Harry evidently did not share this view. ‘‘Look here,’’ he said at last, ‘‘you can see that this is an important step you are going to take, accusing a man of very serious things. You must take somebody's advice. Will you take my father’s?’’ She stared for a few moments thought- fully before her. ‘*Yes,’’ she said at last, slowly. ‘‘I don’t mind hearing what Uncle William has to say.’’ Alice could not judge as well as I could the great relief this decision afford- ed Harry. He sprang away from the door, dragging Alloa towards the stair- case. I followed as a matter of course. We found Mr. Jones writing. He looked up with rather a wan smile, and seemed to ask us with his eyes what fresh trouble we had brought for his consider- ation. *“*Unele,’’ began Alice ‘I want to write to Egbert. I want to see him to ask him questions, if possible to con- front him with Miss Stanton. Harry and Winnie want to prevent me seeing him; but I cannot rest until I have done so. Am I not right?’’ Mr. Jones leaned back in his chair, considering a few moments, just as he did when a client brought him a difficult case, “T think you are right,’’ he pronounced at last, in a judicial tone. “It is only fair to the young man himself. Write to him yourself, telling him to come.’’ “I have written,’’ and Alice produced her letter. ‘‘I meant to give it to Harry, but I'm afraid he wouldn’t post it.’’ “Go and post it yourself, then,’’ said her uncle, simply. Without another word Alice turned to obey with alacrity. Harry looked at his father with an anxious face, I thought he perhaps wanted to exchange a few words with Mr. Jones, so I followed Alice out of the room, leaving father and son together. Harry, however, after a hurried good night, ran after me, We all three got down into the hall together, and Alice, seizing a garden hat, ran off with ber letter, while Harry and I lingered at the front door. Instead of indulging me with a few affectionate words, as I expected, he peered out into the darkness, watching his cousin's light dress flitting down the drive. “You will look after her well, and you will not leave her alone to-night?’’ he said, in a guilty sort of yol-e. “I always stay with ber up to the last,’’ I answered, surprised and anxious. “*Up to the last won’t do,”’ said Harry, rudely. ‘‘You must stay with her all night, and—and behave like a wise girl, if you can.’’ With this he darted down the drive and I saw no more of him that night. I could not understand him. I was staring out into the darkness, lstening to Harry's retreating footsteps and watch- ing for Alice’s return, when I perceived on the left, close to the edge of the lawn, a figure which I took for hers. It Jin- gered, however, instead of coming to the house. ‘‘Alice!’’ I cried, and then as she did not come, I stepped down on the path and called again. instead of answering, the woman allded away among the evergreens, and I recognized that it was not Alice at all but Bertha Stanton. Had Harry seen her? Or had he only guessed that she would be haunting the place again that night? I could not tell; but the reason of his warning now seemed clear. Seeing that on the sound of my voice she must have gone down the drive, I gave chase, examining the trees on the right. and Jeft all the way along as I went, and fancying that from time to time I heard a rustle or caught HAD INDIGESTION! Joseph Gardner, stove dealer, of Bath, Ontario, is a great believer in Dr. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pills for indiges- tion, constipation, dyspepsia, Bright's disease, rheumatism, and kidney, liver and stomach troubles generally. “| was troubled for over forty years with indigestion and constipation,” he writes. “At intervals I suffered from severe headache. In reply to my questions she said thata woman had passed out of the gate as she came in, She had not noticed her par- ticularly, supposing her to be a friend of one of the servants. I did not tell her my suspicions, but Alice watched me curiously as I left her and passed out through the brewery yard and asked the man on duty at the door if he had seen a Woman pass. He said, ‘‘No,’’ and looked at me suspiciously; but he called Higgins at my request. The night watchman, who now held me in much disfavor, asked me surlily what I wanted. “IT want you,’’ I said, ‘‘to be on the lookout to-night. That strange woman is about the place again.’’ ‘*You’re all strange women about ‘ere, it seems to me,’’ he said, drily. ‘‘As to being on the lookout, p’raps I'm more on the lookout already than you think for."' And his little eyes gave me sucha shrewd glance that it struck me more forcibly than eyer that he knew at least as much about the mystery as any one. ‘‘What’s become of your detective?’’ I asked, quietly. **He’s all right.’’ **He comes here still?’’ ‘*Reg’lar.’’ But Mr. Higgins was thing back, I felt sure. However, as it was a waste of time to try and worm out of the clever little cockney anything he wished to keep to himself, I had to withdraw, feeling that I had done all I could to put him on his guard. The brewery, with its many sheds and outbuildings, hal so many nooks and corners where a person might lie hidden for days, that it was with many mis- givings that I glanced from right to left as I went back s0 the house, where Alice and Mrs. Ellis were only waiting for my return to go to bed. Full of Harry's fears and my own, I éid not go to bed, but slipping upstairs before the others, hid myself in the large wardrobe in Alice’s room. I felt like an idiot when Alice came up and retired to bed without any suspicion of my intru- sion. Presentiy I heard by her regular breathing that she was asleep; and feel- ing cold, cross and ashamed of my escapade, I was debating whether I should not creep quietly out and go to my room, when a faint noise of the door handle made me hold my breath. A little more soft fumbling, and I knew that some person had entered the room. Should I leap out and seize the intru- der? Should I keep quiet aud see what happened? I decided on the latter course, for the main reason that I was afraid, theugh of what I scarcely knew. Some one was moving about very softly in the darkness, for Alice's night light was not burning, as usual, by the bedside. Then I heard, as I held my breath, a hand stealthily drawing back the bedclothes. (To be Continued) keeping some- Bulld Up.
