Scenes wHorror] As Flames Reach’ i Score 0L Victims Four Charred Bodies Recovered From Still Smouldering Ruins Of Historic Queen Hotel. (By Harold J. Fair, Canadian Press Staff Writer) HALIFAX, March 2-(CP)—Four charred bodies, only ones recovered from the ruins of the historic Queen Hotel in which at least 25 persons were believed to have perished in an early morning blaze, were examined in a mortuary tonight by Dr. F. V. Woodbury, city medical ex- aminer, as he sought unsuccessfully to identify them. Dr. Woodbury said two of the bodies, taken from the ruins of the building in downtown Halifax this afternoon, were men. Another was a woman and he was unable to determine immediately the sex of the fourth. The fire, the city’s worst disaster since the Halifax explosion caused thousands of deaths 22 years ago, spread from the almost century-old hotel to the adjoining Hesse lin and Hamilton buildings. Damage was estimated at $800,000. Every available plcce of fire-fighting equipment was pressed into service. 4.‘- Plan Thorough Probe Meantime preparations were made for a thorough probe. Nova Scotia Fire Marshal's officials and police con- ferred tonight on procedure. It was known that police and these officials question- ed several hotel employees tonight on possible causes of the fire. No official would comment, however. Authorities said no one was detained. Dr. Woodbury said the “main thing" he sought was identification of the victims. By virtue of special legis- lation, he acts in the same capacity as a coroner and jury, in other parts of the country. If he feels an investigation i noeessmyglie communicates wgiiltp$olaglst€gta~~~no cun- i ; sldered such a course unlikelyiii ‘viowor t e dther pflihe ‘ underway. 4' Ruins Still smouldering‘ Firemen continued pouring water into the smoulder- ing ruins. Frequent puffs of smoke blew up from the dc" bris. Firemen said the ruins would not be cooled suffi‘ ciently to allow resumption of the search for victims until t tomorrow. The entire block on Hollis Street was roped off and police held hundreds of spectators behind police lines. Royal Canadian Mounted Police guarded ruins of the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission store which was located in one of the destroyed buildings. Relatives of more than 35 persons unreported sought tonight for news. Radio stations and newspapers appealed to survivors to report to police headquarters toniake pos- sible a. definite list of dead. Definite Check Impossible The list of recorded missing approached the 25-marli but police said names could not all be placed on a “defin- itely missing, feared dead” list immediately. They might be at another hotel or might have left the city. Absence of the hotel register; locked in a safe buried in the ruins, made a definite check impossible. It was known, however, there were 87 guests and 30 employees in the five-storey brick. wood and stucco building. Early arrivals at the fire scene reported scenes of in- describable horror. Screams from the burning hotel mings- led with theharsh crackle oi‘ flames. People were sees! ' dropping from the windows its high as 30 feet from the ~ ground. Dormitory residents of the Street, l-ialifaxk main business thoroughfare which pur- allels Hollis Street, and is it block away, said they could hear the screams. g ;, l’ '__" Y. u. ti.
