The statement has been made with | respect to the chrysanthemums or pyreth- | rums, but the truth of it is to be doubted. | The experiment, however, is worth trying, for the pyrethrums with their hght green foliage would make a pleasant contrast with } the dark green of erdinary window plants. | The castor bean is, it is true, a large plant | under favorable circumstances a} twenty feet, but it} reaching height of eighteen or may be readily dwarfed by giving it poor| soil and bad treatment, and if necessary | the nurseryman will soon produce a dwarf variety. Mr. Abbey says of Mrs. Langtry :—‘‘ On the stage she is demureness itself. She produces the impression of a quiet, agree- able, sober-minded lady. Off the stage she is more lively. I can’t describe her better than to say she is a very charming woman. She is one of the best dressers lL ever saw That was a chief merit with her, and attracted more womanly attention than anything else. I went to see her three times, and am free to say I wanted to secure her. I believe her worth all I pay her. She will be anovel and a good and a worthy | attraction. She has a clear, pleasant voice, bears herself with unaffected dignity, looks | hke a true woman, and has the manner of a grande dame, without a tinge of affection or a suggestion of shoddy.” People talk a great deal about the huge standing armies of Europe and what bur- dens their maintenance impose upon the people, but it is a fact that labor is to-day more taxed for military purposes in the United States than in any other civilized country. The Congress, whose session has just closed, appropriared for army, navy, fortifications and military pensions, all military purposes, with the clerical force employed on pensions, $160,000,000. This is the largest sum spent in peace for mili- tary purposes by any nation on the globe. For the last year reported, France, 1881, spent $125,000,000; Germany. 1882, $109.- 000,000 ; Great Britain, 1881, $136,700,- 000; and Ruesia, 1881, $117,800,000—al] the other nations of Europe spending each a much less sum Colonel ‘‘ Fred” Burnaby, the English soidier and author, also drives to despair the type-setters who have his maruscript to deal with. Six feet four inches tall, he cannot well stoop over an ordinary table, so he improvisesa writing tablet out of the side of av old portmanteau, places it on his knee and then whirls off sheet after sheet with startling rapidity. The unique hier. oglyphs with which he tells of his ride to Khiva, his balloon adventure. or the events of his political novel, are sometimes formed with a pen, sometimes with a pencil, and sumetimes with a wooden stylet, only a few sentences been written with one before it is discarded for another imple- ment of torture—to the compositors—and the color of his ink is changed almost as frequently. The principal Italian embalmers, says the Lancet, keep their special process a secret, althonuglfthe chief steps are well known. The process of embalming is stated to consist of five steps. First, cold water is injected through the whole circulatory system until it issues quite clear. This may take as long as five hours. Alcohol is then injected for the purpose of abstract- ing all the water from the body. This is followed up by an injection of ether to dissolve out the fatty matter. This injec tion is carried on for several hours—in thin subjects for two, in very fat ones for even as long as ten hours. After this a strong solution of tannin is slowly injected, and full time is allowed for its soaking into all the tissues; this takes from two to five hours. Lastly, the body is exposed from two to five hours to a current of warm air, which is previously dried by passing over it heated chloride of calcium. The body can then be preserved for any length of time without undergoing change, and is as hard as a stone. The Czar’s life must be wretched. In the harbour of Peterhof all the vessels have, it is said, frequently been alarmed and searched three times in a single night, while the Imperial yachts are constantly kept with anchors weighed and steam up, to facilitate the instantaneous flight of the Romanoff family if occasion demanded. And the belief is current that the Czar has ordered all his movable property, of every sort, to be moved and safely lodged in some foreign land. Meanwhile the Boyar aris. tocracy, zealous adherents to, the Romanoff throne, unceasingly urge the necessity of immediate coronation. This ceremony they say, would allay the uneasiness in the provinces, stop disaffection in the army and navy, and greatly add to the Emperor's prestige among the masses, who will regard his authority as having thus received the stamp Of Divinee recognition. So im. pressed is Alexander by these arguments it 18 said, that he Is secretly preparing for a sudden coronation, either in the Kasapg Cathedral, St. Petersburg, or in the Pal:.ce Chapel, Peterhof, the anaouncement re- garding a coronation at Moscow dein ae merely to throw the Nihilists off the Tack,’ GREAT CLOSING UP AT THE DAILY EXAMINER, A 83 QUEEN STREET.
