House closed day oi lrodalbane - stead and their new barn (By -W.W.D.) Yin; up my work and vlaita in various parts of Prince County I went across to Lennox Island. It being my first visit to the Island I was impressed by the iiospitalily of the people, everyone seemed very friendly and enjoyed talking to visitors. As the ‘regular ferry was of! for repairs a motor boat was engaged to carry passengers to and from the Island. The day was warm and bright which made the crossing a pleasant one. On arriving at the Island we stopped to chat with some work- men who were busy digging post holes in preparation for electricity which the people there are soon to enjoy. following this we called on ‘Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tuplin. Mr. Tuplin was away at the time and tn the house we found liirs. Tiiplin and also Mrs. liolin Francis who was busy mixing a cake. They had Just finished digging their potatoes she day previous and now the task of cleaning the dust out of the house was to be tackled. Mrs. Tup- Iin took time out however. to show tier visitors about their cosy ironic- which they had rbcently built. Every family on the Island have their own farm or lat of land which is owned by the Government; most of the homes were built by the Government although some, like the new one we visited. were built by themselves. There are about 3O families living on the Island and they make their living by fishing and farming in the summer and by A Visit To Lennox basket making during the winter. The Government has an acre or so of potatoes planted there every year for those who cannot afford or for those who are unable to work. The nearest stores are in Port l-ilil or Tyne Valley, however a store is being built on this Reser- vation by the Government which will be greatly appreciated especi- ally during the winter months as it will save many a cold hike across thé ice for groceries. Recently a lovely school was built which has two rooms on the main floor and one in the base- ment where seience and other classes will be conducted. Rev. Fr. coronary so, ma. We were shown what was once e beautiful flower garden and is now nothing but rubble, the famllY 805$ WI were told had chewed the rope by which he was tethered and getting into the garden ate all the pretty flowers. It was now time to leave and Francis teaches the senior classes, while Sister Carmelita teaches the junior. Sister Superior Mary Mag- dalin is the nurse and also teaches music. Keen interest is being tak- en in the Boy Scout and Girl Guide groups which are being organized. For recreation they have a fine ball team with Louis Mitchell in charge and in the community hall dances are held. Soon they hope to have their own shows in the hall. In winter skating is the main iit- trnction for both young and old on the ice. Skiing is also a favorite sport. Every summer St. Anne's Sunday is the big day for the Ind- ians here when they celebrate this day. hundreds of people from near and far come to the Island every year to celebrate with the Island- ers. In the morning everyone goes to church while in the afternoon n regular picnic is held including a ball game with some visiting team. The beautiful church shown in the above photo was built by the with the kind invitation to come back again we hid good-bye. On the way to the ivhnrf we met Chirf Sark who was busy working with the men and before going down to the boat we stopped t.o view the memorial which tia been erected near the church.
