Some farmers appear to forget that their land extends to the middle of the roadway, and tliat they have rights end duties in connection with the road sides, At this season it is common to find by the wayside the largest weeds in the neighborhood. They have had it all their own way and this | has been to ripen a large crop of seeds. | Such reglect of the roadside is a great mis- take, as it not only gives a neg'ected ap- pearance to the street, but is a means of propagating weeds that do much damage to the crops in the adjoining fields. It does not matter how clean the cultivated crop may be kept, if weeds are left to grow just | over the fence. It is too late now to do more than collect end burn these, but in doing this, the seeds shonld ali be killed, to make the work of subduing these pests leas burdensome in the future, besides add- ing to the attractiveness of the street. Even heroes often die commonplace deaths. It is not very strange, therefore, that the celebrated racer Blair Athol ended his distinguished career in a somewhat mes fashion on Sunday morning, when e succumbed to an attack of inflanimation of the lungs and kidneys. His life on the turf was not a long one, nor was it un- chequered by defeat, for out of his seven races he lost two. Nevertheless, he ranked very high indeed asa racer in the estima- tion of many competent authorities. . It is, however, as a stud-horse that he will be longest remembered. For some years his progeny failed to stay, and until Craig Mil- lar won the St. Leger, in 1875, it was not believed that he would get a stayer.
