From an issue of the Melbourne Advo- cate, published prior tolfather Hays' arriv- al in Australia, we take the following interesting sketch: Very Rev. Francis C. Hays was born in' Liverpool on May 21, IMS, his father being an Englishman and his mother an Irish woman. The father was by profession an accountant, and by religion an Angli- can. His mother, who died last March, was a Catholic, the sister of the Right Rev. Mgr. Nugent. Father Hays was destined at first for the legal profession, for which he manifested an inclination: but on seeing the squalid misery and degradation of the London slums, he re- solved to oonseorate his life to God in the ranks of the priesthood, and to the special service of the poor, the fullcl and the outcast. This resolution was formed on the ad- vice of Cardinal Manning, who unfortun- ntoly d'ed whilst his youthful disciple was prosecuting the long and arduous studies necessary for the priesthood. At length FutherHays wus ordained priest in St. Barnabas’ Catherleral, Nottingham, on 0ctober28, 1894, by his life-long friend, Bishop Bashawe; so that he has only been tenyears a priest. Yetwhat a. marvellous record of work in n brief spaccl It wus while working among tba poor in the slunul of great cities that a strong con- viction came to him that intcmpernnce wus the root of nearly all the misery and sin of 'the poor; und he fclt the cull of God in ills soul to fight the giant evil of our day. In 1896 Futher Hays established his special society, the Catholic Teniperance Crusude-which has been blessed and cu- coursged by Leo XIII. and Pius X.- under the patronage of the Curdinnl A_rch- hisbops of Westmliister and Armagh. During these eight years success has everywhere followed his \vork, and im- mense good has been accomplished all over Great Britain and V Ireland. The homes ot the people testified to the electrical energy at work, and Fai-her Hays has been universally mixed ‘frat Father Mathew of England." From the many accounts of his work which we have seen, it is evident that _ho isagreat speaker, n man oi’ transparent sincerity and deep humility, nod possess ed of that magnetic power which can hold enthralled vnst audiences of people ol' every class. If.Fnther Mathew wus the Elijah, Father l-lays is certainly the Elisha of tempcrnnce. Spateforhids us to give more ihnn n single specimen of his eloquence, but it will suffice to give some iden of his power.
